Friends of Marsh Creek Watershed Responds to Report of “Fish Kill” in Marsh Creek

by ECT

The Friends of Marsh Creek Watershed responded to Marsh Creek Monday after several people reported seeing dead fish in the creek.

According to Diane Burgis, executive director of the organization, she said most of the dead fish were found near Delta Road with hundreds of fish also dead further down stream.

“It appears the fish have been dead for at least 24-hours and could have been exposed to some chemicals that were dumped in a storm drain that washed out during the recent rain,” said Burgis.

Burgis highlighted she has been in contact wit the City of Brentwood, the East Bay Regional Park District and California Fish & Game to investigate what exactly happened.

She also highlighted that on September 27, 2014 they had similar conditions with low flow because of the drought. A few days after that rainfall, a fish kill was discovered on a warm fall day.

Burgis reminds residents that nothing except rain should go down storm drains.

“People need to be reminded that although its not been raining, they should never pour anything down a storm drain, including chemicals because that harms fish and the wildlife.

She is hopeful they will be able to get down to the bottom of this incident and will provide more information when it becomes available.
