Freedom HS Principal Seeks to Ensure Safety During Gun Violence Protest

by ECT

Freedom High School Principal Kelly Manke sent out a letter today to parents ensuring safety will be their priority should students choose to participate in a walk-out protesting gun violence.

Here is a copy of the letter:

Good afternoon Freedom Families,

In response to the recent tragedy in Parkland Florida on February 14, there has been an increase in advocacy at a national level to raise the youth voice against gun violence. On March 14, the Women’s March Youth Empower Network is asking students, teachers, administrators, and parents to take part in a 17 minute school walk-out at 10:00 am.

As a school it is our responsibility to ensure student and staff safety in the event of a peaceful walk-out. If students choose to walk-out, the administration and campus security will supervise and guide students to black top area. Teachers are expected to remain in their classrooms teaching and no student will be left alone in a classroom.

While students will not face consequences for peacefully protesting, a right afforded to them by the first amendment, they may receive academic consequences for missing assignments and assessments if students peacefully walkout.  If students do not return to class after the seventeen-minutes or leave campus entirely, they may receive a class cut.

The administration is here to support you and your student. We hope that you will support our efforts in reviewing this important information with your student this evening.

Respectfully,

Kelly Manke

According to the Women’s March Youth Empower Network toolkit:

WHAT?

Women’s March Youth Empower is calling for a National School Walkout to protest Congress’ refusal to take action on the gun violence epidemic plaguing our schools and neighborhoods. Our elected officials must do more than tweet thoughts and prayers in response to this violence. Students and allies are organizing a National School Walkout to demand Congress pass legislation to keep us safe from gun violence at our schools, on our streets and in our homes and places of worship. We view this work as part of an ongoing and decades-long movement for gun violence prevention, in honor of all victims of gun violence ㅡ from James Brady to Trayvon Martin to the 17 people killed in Parkland.

WHO?

Students, Teachers, School Staff, Parents, Everyone.

WHERE?

Schools and universities across America. Workplaces and Legislative Houses are encouraged to join in solidarity.

I agree, this is BS!! Mar 13, 2018 - 6:39 pm

Let our kids march, love them, protect them, cherish them, feel them, respect them, they should not have fear in their minds at school. We as adults need to eliminate their fear.

They can protest and march before or after school. During school hours they should be in school.

When I went to School they would not tolerate protests during classes. You were suspended. After school, at lunch, or before School. It also had more meaning because we had to protest on our time. Schools are failing our children and family values.

They are marching for the wrong thing. They should be marching for securing more funding to treat the mentally ill. However, they are being used by liberal teachers to push their political agenda and the tax payers should not be paying for this.
