Freedom HS Principal Provides Update on Snap Chat Threat, Increased PD Presence Until Perpetrator Caught

by ECT

The Oakley Police Department and Freedom High School is investigating a Snap Chat that went out to students on Tuesday. The Oakley Police Department says there appears to be no threat, but will have officers on campus on Wednesday.

Updated Letter Wednesday evening by Principal Manke:

Dear Freedom Families:

I would like to thank you for your patience and support throughout the day. Here is an update with the most current information regarding the threat made on Snap Chat directed at Freedom High School.

Today, we had additional presence on campus for the entirety of the school day. The Oakley Police Department are working with the District Attorney’s Office as well as the FBI to investigate the threats made and they are following all leads received by students and community members. For those who have contributed to the investigation, I can’t thank you enough. Additionally, I am grateful for the “all hands on deck” attitude of the Oakley PD during the past 17-hours.

Over the past three years, we have taken steps such as locking all classroom doors during instructional time, securing an increased number of perimeter gates during the school day, and we have added numerous additional security cameras to our school to ensure a safe and secure campus. In addition to our prior active shooter trainings, our facility and staff are scheduled to participate in “ALICE” active shooter training.

It is unfortunate that we have to endure situations such as this especially during this very difficult week. The Freedom Community will stay strong and continue to provide a safe environment for our students and staff, and I appreciate all of the conversation you have already had with your students regarding social media use.

Going forward we will continue enhanced police presence until the perpetrator is identified to help our school community feel safe during this unsettling time. Our staff will continue to support students in any way that we can and I will update you with information as it becomes available.

Respectfully,

Kelly Manke
Principal

Here is the Original letter sent out by Principal Manke:

Dear Freedom Families,

This evening it was reported to the Freedom Administration that a threatening Snap Chat message had been sent out to many of our students. This Snap Chat referenced the Columbine School Shooting and implied that Freedom was going to be a target Wednesday, October 24, 2018.

The Snap Chat account these messages originated from has already been reported to the Police and is currently under investigation for sending inappropriate content to female students. The students who were involved, as well as their parents, have been working with the Freedom Administration and Oakley Police Department.

We take these types of comments very seriously, and appreciate those students and community members who brought this to our attention. Tonight, I have spoke with the leaders of the police department who informed me that there is no reason to interrupt the normal school day based upon this message. However, there will be significant presence of officers on campus throughout the day.

We appreciate the quick response from the Oakley Police Department and will continue to work in collaboration to ensure that Freedom High School is a safe and secure learning environment for our students and staff.

Respectfully,

Kelly Manke
Principal

Kids, need to go back to simple stuff like toilet paper for pranks. Snap and social media pranks can ruin a kids life. Schools need to educate more on the reprocussins of social media.

Parents need to do the educating, imho. Leaving our kids to be raised by a broken government will always disappoint. Schools are an adjunct to what is learned in the home.

I agree with the simple stuff but I think that the responsibility lies on parents to do a better job of teaching rights from wrongs and instilling better social, morality and ethics in their children. Schools are a resource and backup to teaching. Parents and family are the first line and most effective basis of teaching children what is and isn’t acceptable- socially, spiritually, physically, and emotionally.

Tbh I think this is an example of bad parenting. No student with a loving family would ever do this, even if they were bullied at school. Stop blaming the teachers so you other parents who are like this don’t get flank, you can still fix the mistakes you’ve made with your child.

this could’ve all been solved in the beginning by solving who Kevin jones now it has exalted to something even worse, we could’ve avoid this.

There is a new snap chat message going around as of tonight stating a students name. He is talking about how today did not go as planned and how tomorrow he sound end all of the students miserable lives starting in the MPR at 930. My child is scared to go to school tomorrow. We kept him out today. I wish could copy the text to this reply.

It’s not always the parents fault. Some of you are now bullying the parents. There is a deep root to everything and it should not be assumed that it is the parents fault. Mental health, society, social media and more. You can do absolutely everything right as a parent and your kid go completely opposite. Those that think its strictly parenting may be in for a rude awakening one day.

‘You can do absolutely everything right as a parent and your kid go completely opposite.’ This is a very rare occurrence. 9 out 10 times it is because the parent would not discipline their child or was a bad parent. In today’s age, discipline is frowned upon. I whooped my kids, when they were little, and society can thank me later. They will not be wasting tax dollars for incarceration down the road. 100% this kid saw many bad decisions from his/her parents to turn out like this. No respect for authority is a bad way to send minnows out into the world of Sharks.

Wrong. Appears you aren’t much for facts nor statistics. And THAT is the problem.

-From a parent.
Even if you think you’ve done everything there is still stuff you can do like you know, protecting your child from social media by simply taking away their phone. And if your child has a mental disorder and you know and use it as a deploy instead of getting them proper help then you are failing as a parent.

Der der der not my fault Oct 25, 2018 - 10:35 am

Your child must be an asshole and you are defending yourself! Of course it is the parents fault!!! Everything you child does while she/he lives under your control is your fault.

Hollie Oct 25, 2018 - 3:17 pm

Thank you

Wow c’mon man Oct 25, 2018 - 8:01 am

Maybe some of you parents should keep your little brats off social media. Stop letting you sons and daughters act much older than they are and teach them how to respect people. I am in college and see how these little assholes that come out of high school act!!! They have zero respect for instructors zero respect for other Students zero respect for themselves. Before college I spent 12 years in the Military and let me tell you a lot has changed from 1998 when I came in those same assholes join the Military and don’t even know the basics of life I.e bathe, clean, brush teeth, mail a letter, know their home phone number or address you name it the list goes on. The education system did have more control over students until “parents” started whining and most life skills classes were taken out. You mother fuckers complain about teachers teaching your kids about sex and having respect for their bodies but y’all won’t even do that. Say your kids need extra hours of sleep and start school later??? Fuck, it’s because you mother fuckers are too lazy to get them to school and too stupid to make your kids go to bed at a decent time to get enough sleep. Yeah it’s the Parents fault!!! Be more involved in your children’s life and start supporting the teachers that have to watch your little assholes!!! You all have to blame someone else for your short comings but the truth of the matter you are to blame. You want a good example, go sit by Antioch High in the morning and see all the fucked up parents breaking laws in the intersection, letting their kids get out of the car in the lane of traffic and than cry when they get hit. It was your fault for being a jackass and not making sure your child was safe. Look at Freedom High, it is grid lock traffic because of parents taking their kids to school!!! Have you mother fuckers heard of a school bus, walking or hell even riding a bike to school? Pathetic ass weak parents afraid of parenting. Get a hold of your kids and teach them right from wrong and this shit won’t happen. Find the “Kevin” and let the Justice system make a firm strong example out of him. How many of you are tired of this shit yet?

Notaperfectworld Oct 25, 2018 - 9:02 am

Wow, I agree with you in many ways, however, your vulgar language is everything you say is wrong! Did your parents allow that sort of language while growing up? You are disrespecting everyone who is reading this. What kind of message is that?

I dont care about your feelings Oct 25, 2018 - 9:23 am

Listen, I don’t care if my language offends you. Obviously being nice and considerate of others feelings is getting us nowhere and vulgar language is not the problem. Fuck, is a common word in my vocabulary and it seems to work for me and yes I come from a long line of Military background and everyone curses like a Sailor.

None ya business Oct 25, 2018 - 9:26 am

I am also 42 years old and I don’t have time for some lectures about language. My children don’t act like assholes and treat everyone with respect. I am friends with their teachers and I know what my kids do.

You don’t have to resort to violence to raise kids properly. Js

Christian - Conservative Oct 29, 2018 - 2:18 pm

Discipline is not violence when conducted correctly. Never in anger and only after a lengthy, calm discussion about exactly what was unacceptable behavior and how things could be done correctly next time.
Any child disciplined properly will grow up and understand consequence of decisions. Something clearly lacking in today’s Liberal society. I have witnessed the parents asking and urging their kids to behave instead of demanding it. Good luck with the ‘time-out’ idea. Liberals have been failing using this parent technique for years. I will give one look and my kids know what is coming if the look comes again. Properly applied fear works on kids as well as adults. Parents, your Parents and grandparents turned out just fine. Now look at us, We have gotten way too soft.

Especially whenOakley PD doesn’t have the resources to investigate this! My 14 daughter was the victim of internet pedofile, you think they did one thing after a year? They said they don’t have the staff for this type of crime and just turned it over to the DA..
