Contra Costa County District Attorney Mark Peterson on Friday urged parents to pick up free “Computer Cop” software aimed at protecting children from online predators and bullying.

The software, paid for with assets taken from drug dealers, enable parents to scan photos, videos, emails and chat messages from inappropriate content.

According to the District Attorney Office, 34 percent of 10-17 year olds have unwanted exposure to sexual material and 1-in-25 youths receive an on-line sexual solicitation where the solicitor tried to make offline contact.

“Over the past year, our office has filed 15 cases that involve the use of the internet to victimize children. Every day children are contacted by predators throughout the internet. This software lets parents see what their kids are up to online and heads off dangerous situations before they occur,” Peterson said.

The District Attorney Office recently hosted an internet crimes against children task force meeting where police officers were trained on the newest technology to capture those individuals who prey on children for sexual purposes.

“Computer Cop” software enables computers to be searched for content “cookies”, text logs with key words of sexual nature, drug slang, gang names and terms and violent or threatening words.

The District Attorney’s office is making 500 copies of the software available.

Copies can be picked up at any Contra Costa County Library or at any of the District Attorneys three regional offices.
