Frazier Named 2014 Legislator of the Year by the American Legion, Department of California

by ECT

Sacramento, CA – Assemblymember Jim Frazier (D – Oakley) has been named the 2014 Assembly Legislator of the Year by the American Legion, Department of California for his support of veterans and the military.

“I am deeply honored to be selected by the American Legion as their 2014 Assembly Legislator of the Year,” said Assemblymember Frazier. “I am always thankful for the opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of veterans, and I look forward to continuing my work in the legislature to help improve the lives of all who have served our country.”

Since assuming office in 2013, Assemblymember Frazier has worked diligently to support California veterans. His first introduced bill, Assembly Bill 287, requires the California Department of Veterans Affairs to annually compile a list of Vietnam veteran names to be ABadded to the California Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Capitol Park. Many Vietnam veterans were not included on the original memorial at the time it was constructed; some were inadvertently left off the original list, but many others died after returning home as a direct result of injuries or illness during or related to their service in Vietnam.

“Assemblyman Frazier’s door has been wide open to myself and Legionnaires on all issues concerning veterans and their families,” said Janet Wilson, American Legion Department Commander.

After a two year effort, Assemblymember Frazier secured a second victory for California veterans with Assembly Bill 935. Commencing Veterans Day of 2015, this bill will allow a veteran to apply for a California driver’s license or identification card with a designation that clearly identifies the individual as a veteran. The designation will also will help veterans access the federal, state and local benefits and services for which they are eligible.

Assemblymember Frazier was also a major sponsor of two major veterans events at the Capitol, including the 25th Anniversary Celebration of the California Vietnam Veterans Memorial and The Wall That Heals Vietnam Memorial Travelling Wall from Washington D.C.

Frazier will be presented with the Legislator of the Year Award at the Capitol on April 29, 2015 during the American Legion’s annual Capitol Legislative Day. For more information about veterans and available resources, please visit Jim’s Veteran Resource Webpage.
