This past Tuesday, the City of Brentwood voted to accept the recommendation of Mayor Bob Taylor and Vice Mayor Joel Bryant to appoint Robert A. Brockman, Lance Crannell, and Joseph Weber to the Planning Commission for two-year terms expiring December 31, 2014.

Brockman originally served on the planning commission between 2000-2003 and was elected to the City Council so he has been doing this type of work for over a decade.

“For individuals to come forward to take on the daunting task of helping plan the future of the community, is quite a burden and for the quality of individuals we had to apply it was very impressive because ll of them are very busy individuals and I was very impressed with the opportunity to meet and talk with them,” said Bryant.

Referring to Brockman, Crannell, Weber; vice mayor Bryant spoke highly of the three.

“All three are some of the best individuals that I can imagine doing this job going forward. They have an intimate knowledge of the history details of how we got there and where we would like to go so I would like to thank them for the job they will be doing, said Bryant.

I have no problem with these appointments.  In fact, Robert Brockman makes a lot of sense as the appointment because of his knowledge on the City Council and likely has information that will be useful to the commission. While I do not have a problem with Brockman’s appointment,  I’ve heard from folks since Tuesday in Brentwood question the appointment of Brockman given his legal history with a conditional use permit which was reported in the Contra Costa Times and Brentwood Press a few years back.

For the record, Brockman denies any wrong doing. Here is a clip from the CC Times article which I put on this blog a few months back Full article:

Update: After publishing this original article, the City of Brentwood has provided me with the applications of the 12-applicants.  While they did not feel the need to provide me with the actual rankings of all the applicants, here is who applied along with the documents they submitted as part of the application process.

BACKGROUND (Via Staff Report)

The terms for two Planning Commissioners expired on December 31, 2012, and there was an additional vacancy due to the earlier resignation of Planning Commissioner David Bristow, whose term was set to expire on December 31, 2012. Pursuant to Council Policy 30-1, the Commissioners serve two year terms and thereafter until their respective successors are appointed. Staff advertised the vacancies on November 2, 2012, and a total of 12 applications were received by the November 30, 2012 deadline.

An ad hoc subcommittee comprised of Mayor Taylor and Vice Mayor Bryant was formed to interview the candidates and make recommendations on the appointments directly to the Council.

The ad hoc subcommittee reviewed the applications and hereby recommends that the Council approve the appointment of Robert A. Brockman, Lance Crannell, and Joseph Weber to the Planning Commission for two year terms expiring December 31, 2014.

Some strong candidates if you ask me. I would have hated to be on the committee and narrowing down the field.

With Bob Brockmans history of not getting permits, He is the last person I want serving in any role for Brentwood.
