Fire Shuts Down Highway 4 Near Balfour Rd. Wednesday Afternoon

by ECT

At 1:15 pm, East Contra Costa Fire Protection District responded to a fire that burned an estimated three acres near Balfour Road—by the time it was over, it burned closer to four acres and sent a large plume of smoke into the air which could be seen for miles.

The incident caused the California Highway Patrol to block of Highway 4 Bypass between Balfour and Marsh Creek Road as crews worked.  It also threatened the golf course driving range and a couple of holes at the Brentwood Golf Club off Summerset Drive by Nines Restaurant.

Although the fire was contained by 3:30, crews were on scene for 2 hours and 34 minutes and it used a lot of resources.

According to Chief Hugh Henderson, the fire may have started from a tractor mowing the grass along the road way.

We live on the west side of Antioch and saw the smoke from here. That could have been a tricky one. Thanks to the fire department and police agencies that had to work on this fire.

Too bad they got rid of the volunteers and never accepted any of the over sixty new applications for volunteering. Really bad management and commission. Real good work by the union. I can’t wait until they ask for a new tax again just so I can say no. Great pictures and good job by the firefighters.

& I can’t wait ’till you need emergency services (fire or police) and they are not there for you….all so you could save a buck.

To that I’ll say “interesting”.

…….and for the insane idea of volunteers in this day and age, I say “ignorance”.

Thanks for the demonstration of both.

Great idea… let’s vote NO so those that truly need the emergency services can suffer! All because some selfish person can enjoy 10 more starbucks coffees a year.
