Family Dog Attacks Owner, Woman Seriously Injured in Pinole

by ECT

Martinez CA, — On March 1, at 10:00 a.m., Officers from the Pinole Police Department were called to an address on Silverado Drive in Pinole California, to a report of a severe dog attack.  They located the bite victim at that location, a 40 year old woman, suffering from multiple and severe bite injuries.

The victim was airlifted to the John Muir Trauma Center for emergency medical treatment after suffering injuries to her face, arms and legs.

The initial investigation confirmed that the attacking dog lives with the victim and other adults, in the same household. The dog, “Blinky”, a 9 ½ year old Pit Bull mix,  reportedly began the attack, while some type of unrelated medical emergency was said to being occurring at the home.   “Blinky” was stabbed several times and hit with a baseball bat several times in an attempt to bring the attack to an end.  “Blinky” was also pepper-sprayed by the Pinole Police.

Department when he re-entered the home as first aid was being provided to the victim.  Contra Costa County Animal Services impounded the animal and transported it to the Martinez California Animal Shelter for veterinary care.  Animal Services subsequently euthanized the dog Sunday evening, to provide tissue samples for rabies testing.

In minor bite cases, animals are quarantined for at least ten days, to assist in determining whether or not the victim should seek rabies treatment.  In cases of severe multiple bites, or bites above the shoulders, tissue samples are used to provide a quicker indication of the presence of the rabies virus in the biting animal.

Contra Costa County Animal Services continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding this case.
