Although this is beyond East Contra Costa, we are sharing this because it highlights mail theft and how alert citizens can help protect their community from mail theft and fraud.

Fairfield: Citizen Tip leads to Arrests for Stealing Mail

Two Fairfield residents were arrested early Sunday morning after an alert citizen reported suspicious activity in their neighborhood.

The citizen called Fairfield Police just after 1:00 AM to report two man acting suspiciously on Concord Way. Officers responded to the area and located two men matching the description given by the reporting person.

The men were in possession of several items of mail from numerous residences in the area.

Officers arrested Korey Smith, 30, of Fairfield, for petty theft, possession of stolen property, criminal conspiracy, an violation of probation. Also arrested was Michael Anderson, 34, of Fairfield, for criminal conspiracy.

The Fairfield Police Department would like to take this opportunity to remind our residents that mail theft is a common way for identity thieves to gain another person’s personal information, This can be prevented by picking up mail daily, and placing a hold on mail delivery when going on vacation.
