SACRAMENTO – This weekend, AB 1674, the Fair Access to University of California Act of 2017, authored by Assemblymember Timothy S. Grayson (D-Concord), was signed by Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. AB 1674 ensures that qualified in-state students are not denied admission at UC institutions in favor of less qualified out-of-state students who pay more in tuition and fees.
Upon passage Assemblymember Grayson said the following:
“I want to thank Governor Brown for signing this bill into law and supporting qualified local students who dream of graduating high school and attending some of the highest quality institutions in their home state. This bill will make sure that admission at a UC campus is based on academic performance, not the revenue that the student generates. I am pleased that the Governor is joining with me in taking a stand for California’s students.”
AB 1674 specifies that when UC campuses admit nonresident undergraduate students, their academic qualifications should exceed those of resident undergraduate students.
“Each year, the UC has continued to admit a growing number of out-of-state and international students while equally or more highly qualified in-state students are being rejected,” said Assemblymember Grayson. “The UC’s original mission is to serve California’s students, and this bill holds the UC accountable to that mission.”
AB 1674 will take effect January 1st, 2018.
