East County Events: October 25 and Beyond

This weekend in East Contra Costa County will feature a variety of local Halloween themed events in Antioch, Brentwood and Discovery Bay. You are also encouraged to attend a free Car Seat Safety inspection from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at the Brentwood Senior Center

On Sunday, join the Contra Costa County Humane Society at the Streets of Brentwood for their adoption event while Brownstone Gardens will host a free photography day where you can use their facility as a backdrop for your fall and winter photos. The Kiwanis Club will also be hosting a restaurant tour allowing you to sample a variety of restaurants.

Here is a rundown of this weekends events and beyond.


Brentwood Hometown HalloweenOctober 25: Hometown Halloween
Hometown Halloween Sponsored by the Brentwood Chamber of Commerce and Sutter Delta Medical Center, City of Brentwood – October 25, 2014.  Trick or Treat in Downtown Brentwood on First and Oak Streets from 5:00 to 7:30 pm. . Merchants can set up a booth at this event. This event draws over 5000 families.  Safe way for the kids to Trick or Treat


Antioch Animal Services Halloween

October 25: The Howl-O-Weenie Mutt Strut
The 2nd Annual Howl-O-Weenie Mutt Strut is coming back to Antioch Animal Services [300 L Street, Antioch, CA] on SATURDAY, OCTOBER 25, 2014 from 10:00am to 1:00pm.

The Costume Parade will start at 10:30am! Prizes will be awarded for Most Unique Pet Costume. Best Family Costume, Look-a-Like Pet/Owner Costume, Best Green Costume, Cutest Dressed Costume and Scariest Costume!

  • All dogs MUST be on a leash to participate! Cats and other pets are welcomed as well.
  • Be sure to decorate a pumpkin at home and bring it to the Decorated Pumpkin Contest!
  • The first 50 participants at this year’s Mutt Strut will receive a goodie bag!
  • There will also be special rates on adoptions!
  • Be sure to bring an umbrella in case it rains!
  • As always, this event is FREE and open to the public!

Special guests in attendance will be Fido Alert – East Contra Costa County, Hairy Hounds, Memoirs of a Dog, Pit Stop pet services, Colorful Face Painting and Furry Friends Food Relief Program!

Join Assemblyman Jim Frazier, the California Highway Patrol and the Brentwood Police Officers Association for a free Car Seat Safety Inspection Event at the Brentwood Senior Activity Center located at 193 Griffifth Lane, Brentwood from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm.

Help protect your children and ensure they are properly restrained in your automobile by having
a certified NHTSA Child Passenger Safety Technician inspect your car seat and teach you about
the proper installation of these devices.

Free child fingerprinting and public safety tips will also be provided by the Brentwood Police
Officers Association.

Booville-flyerjpgOctober 25: Booville 2014
Discovery Bay Elementary School located at 1700 Willow Lake Road in Discovery bay is hosting its Booville 2014 to help raise funds for student programs. Events and activities are designed for kids preschool through middle school. Activities include: pumpkin launchers, music, slide, Costume and Jack-O-Lantern Contests, photo booth, obstacle courts and much more. Ages 3-15 is $10, Adults 16+ is $5. Admission includes all games.


Sand Creek CrossingOctober 25: Bewitching Fun at Sand Creek Crossing Shopping Center
Come and enjoy this FREE event with trick-or-treating, pumpkin carving demonstrations, free pumpkins, face painting, balloon artistry and more at Sand Creek Crossing Shopping Center. Participating stores will hand out candy and goodies to children in costume, so bring a bag for all your candy and goodies! Sand Creek Crossing is proud to host a safe, fun-filled Halloween Event for the community.

The event will be held from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm at Sand Creek Crossing is located at 2400 Sand Creek Rd in Brentwood, CA 94513.

The Arts & Cultural Foundation of Antioch’s continues their partnership with Antioch’s Umpqua Bank and features six artists in their upcoming exhibit. The bank is a perfect venue for local artists to showcase their work, which changes every two months. Featured artists are: Shirley DiMercurio, Carol Jurczak, Daniel Kennedy, Allen Kidwell, Lorraine Lawson, and Paul Schorr.

Brentwood Science on Saturday

October 25: Science on Saturday – Computer Simulation, Exploring Nature With a Computer
This free event is being sponsored by the City of Brentwood and will be held on October 25 from 9:30 am to 10:30 am at the Brentwood Community Center (35 Oak St.)

Computers are becoming an increasingly cheaper, more powerful tool that cannot be ignored by professionals. Computer simulation reproduces the behavior of natural and man-made systems to help us understand, predict, and communicate. This lecture will explore how LLNL scientists use computer simulation on the world’s fastest computers. We will also show you how you can get started doing your own computer simulations with free, open-source tools for class projects or just for fun! Students, teachers and parents are invited to attend Science on Saturday (SOS). SOS provides science talks with demonstrations highlighting cutting edge science at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL).

Our FINAL free community Open Garden Photo Shoot Day is October 26th 2014 from 10am – 4pm. Please mark this on your calendars because this will be the last one for 2014. Guests are allowed to come anytime between 10am – 4pm with their photographer or self photographers are welcome. Bring your own props. NO FOOD PROPS allowed.

Street SmartsOctober 28: CHP Smart Start Driving Safety Program
Tuesday   7:00 PM – 9:00 PM at Freedom High School

Start Smart is a two-hour driver safety education class given by the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The class targets new and future licensed teenage drivers and their parents/legal guardians. Nov. 9: Celebrate the Joy of Remembrance at Hospice of the East Bay’s  East County Tree of Lights
Hospice of the East Bay invites the public to participate in the 28th annual Tree of Lights ceremony for residents of East County on: Sunday, November 9, 5:00 pm, at Brentwood City Park, 710 2nd Street at Oak. This year’s tree lighting is dedicated to the memory of Gary Agopian.

The ceremony will provide a way to honor the lives of their friends and loved ones in East County. Everyone is invited to participate in the events which include music, poetry, remembrances by family members and hospice staff, and the special moment when the tree lights up.

By dedicating a Memorial Light for a minimum gift of $25, you can honor someone you love while directly supporting end-of-life patient care. Memorial donors of $100 and higher will have the option to have their names listed in the lighting ceremony program of their choice. Funds raised allow Hospice of the East Bay to provide essential programs and services such as the Vigil Program which ensures no one has to die alone and Bruns House, our inpatient hospice facility in Alamo.

Oakley veterans Day 2014November 11: Oakley Veterans Day Observance Ceremony and Veterans Memorial Ribbon Cutting
The City of Oakley will be hosting its 3rd Annual Veterans Day Observance Ceremony and Veterans Memorial Ribbon Cutting on Tuesday, November 11, 2014 at the Civic Center Park beginning at 11:00am. 

The program includes music, the Presentation of Colors, an opening invocation, student essays, 3-volley salute, taps, a closing benediction and most importantly the much anticipated unveiling and ribbon cutting of the Veterans Memorial which is on track to be completed on this special day.
The event’s keynote will be delivered by former Marine Corps Sgt Nathan D. Johnson, who served in Pakistan and Iraq during Operation Enduring Freedom. He is now a Service Officer for the Contra Costa County Veterans Service Office.

This 5k Road Race around the Streets of Brentwood is a fundraising event that benefits the Brentwood Union School District and Liberty Union High School District athletic programs. Dec 4 Seafood banquetDecember. 4: Fundraiser for Antioch High School
The Seafood Banquet is in it’s 22nd year. It is put on by the 19th Hole in Antioch as a fundraiser for the Antioch High School Football program and Antioch High School Music Masters. It is on Thursday, December 4th at 6pm. There are still tickets available but space is limited. They are $65 each. If people are interested in purchasing they can stop in or call the 19th Hole. The students involved in Music Masters and the Football programs at Antioch High are selling raffle tickets for $2.00 apiece. The prizes include a

55″ Vizio HD TV donated by Best Buy in Brentwood, 3 Month Single Membership to In~Shape of Antioch, $150.00 Gift Card to Best Buy donated  by ICR Electric, $100.00 in California Lottery Tickets donated by The 19th Hole, and Dinner for Four at Mac’s Old House.
