April 4: Brentwood Farmers Market
the Brentwood Farmers’ Market on is open on Saturday from 8am to 12pm, Oak St. and First St.  New this year – they have expanded around the corner onto Oak St. The season will run from March 7, 2015 to November 21, 2015.


 

Doug-HardcastleApril 4: Oakley Mayor At Grocery Outlet
Mayor Doug Hardcastle will be at Grocery Outlet this Saturday, April 4th from noon to 2:00 p.m. If you haven’t already, check out the new store to stock up on those needed grocery items and be sure to stop by the Mayor’s booth to say hi.


Delta-Veterans-GroupApril 11: Delta Veterans Group to Honor Area Vietnam Veterans
On April 11th 2015, the Delta Veterans Group will honor Vietnam Veterans who both fought for and died for our country at a BBQ in their honor.

The BBQ will take place at the Antioch Historical Society – 1500 West 4th St Antioch CA 94509. Posting of Colors will start at 11:30am and John Amie, Vietnam Veteran and member of Veterans of Oakley, is the guest speaker.

All ticket sales will go to funding the Stand Down on the Delta 2015, which will take place on Sept 11-14th 2015 at the Contra Costa County fairgrounds in Antioch. There will be music and plenty of food. DasBotics of Concord will have 3D printed items available to purchase, including cell phone cases and other items (a percentage of the sales will go to DVG operating fund).

Tickets are $20 on the day of the event, but $15 tickets can be purchased up to April 10th at VFW 6435 – 815 Fulton Shipyard, Antioch CA 94509. Families can also purchase tickets that provide a family of up to 5 with entry and food. They can be purchased for $40 at VFW 6435 before April 10th, and $45 at the day of the event.

April 11-May 2: Lynn House Gallery Exhibit “Through MY Lens”

The Arts & Cultural Foundation of Antioch is proud to present the first photography only exhibit, “Through My Lens”, which will feature 35 photographers at the Lynn House Gallery from April 11th – May 2nd, 2015. Meet the photographers at the free artist reception on April 11th from 2-4 PM.

It was not a surprise that the exhibit’s Call for Artists was filled within two days of posting as photography has become one of the fastest growing hobbies, as well as having commercial applications. Photography is considered as one of the rare hobbies that you can easily learn and digital art expression is fast, easy and provides immediate satisfaction. Don’t miss this opportunity to enjoy photos of people, places and things by community members.

April 11: The New Oakley Library — Run for it!  
The Friends of the Oakley Library are hosting the second annual Book It Run, Saturday April 11, 2015 to promote the building of a new library for Oakley.  There will be a 10K, 5K,  and a 1K Run/Walk around the lake plus a FREE Kids Fun Run Electronic chip timing will be provided by the Freedom High Athletic Department for the 5k and 10k.  A Free T-shirt and medallion will be given to all registered in our 1k, 5k, and 10k before 4/3/2015.  Free books to the first 250 kids entered in the Kids Fun Run.  Sign up for Kids Fun Run at the park on the day of the run before 10:00.  The Kids Fun Run starts at 10:00. MADS TOLLING leads his world-class Quartet in an exciting and fun show celebrating some of the most memorable instrumental hits from the 1960’s “MAD MEN” Era.  From TV & Movie Themes and Top 10 hit recordings, the program includes favorites ranging from “Mission Impossible”, “The Pink Panther”, and “Meet The Flintsones” to “Georgia On My Mind” and “Classical Gas.”Antioch’s NICHOLAS CROSSEN (“American Idol” contestant, Season 12) joins Mads as Guest Vocalist to perform classics including the Theme from “A Summer Place”, “A Time For Us” (from Romeo & Juliet), “It Don’t Mean A Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing), and “What A Wonderful World.”)Having recently and triumphantly debuted his Violin Concerto with The Oakland East Bay Symphony (“…a cross-genre Genius”), MADS TOLLING is an internationally renowned violinist, violist, and composer originally from Copenhagen, Denmark.  He won two Grammy Awards for Best Classical Crossover albums, was nominated for a third Grammy this year, and is a featured Yamaha “Silent Strings” Artist.

He has appeared at many of the world’s most prestigious Jazz Festivals and continues to tour internationally.  Locally, he has performed  everywhere from The Newport Jazz Festival and The Hollywood Bowl, to Yerba Buena Gardens, Herbst Theatre, and regularly at Yoshi’s.

He received Denmark’s Sankt Annae’s Award for Musical Excellence, and has performed for Danish Royalty – Prince Frederick & Princess Mary – at the celebration for The Danish Embassy’s 50 year anniversary.

He is a former member of both Turtle Island Quartet and Stanley Clarke’s band, and now leads his own group – Mads Tolling Quartet.

Join the fun and make a difference in your community on Saturday, April 18th; volunteer for 5th Annual Antioch’s Keep Antioch Beautiful event, from 8:30 – 11 AM. Following the cleanup, there will be a free volunteer lunch at East Bay Regional Contra Loma Park from 11:30AM – 1 PM.

The effort continues on Saturday, April 18th, with 12 check-in locations. Schools and students will be competing for participation prize money for their schools. There are 3 prizes, $500 for 1st Place, $300 for 2nd Place and $200 for 3rd Place, with prizes awarded to each level of high, middle and elementary schools – that’s $3,000 in participation prizes!Participation is not limited to students to count towards prizes; parents, grandparents, friends, etc. can register their efforts for an individual school. We count everyone who is working if they state a school to credit – not just students! Volunteers who check in at a school site will be cleaning up the neighborhoods surrounding their campuses as well as their campuses.

Sunday, April 19th: Delta Science in Action
The Delta Science Center and the East Bay Regional Park District are hosting this exciting workshop that will include a variety of hands-on activities for children to learn about the waters and the wildlife that make the Delta their home. The program will run from 10:00a.m. – 1:00p.m. at the Big Break Visitor Center patio, 69 Big Break Road, Oakley

Monday, April 20th: Mad Science
The fun staff from Mad Science of Mt. Diablo will be on hand to assist children in a variety of science experiments. Children will learn how magnets work and learn about sonic sounds. The “Science of Toys” will teach children how to relate to science through toys. This workshop will start at 3:30p.m. at Laurel Elementary School, 1141 Laurel Road, Oakley. The program runs 45 – 50 minutes so participants who arrive late may not have a chance to stop by each activity.

Tuesday, April 21st: Lego Engineering
Lego Engineering is one of the most popular activities during Science Week. The skilled staff at Bricks 4 Kids will have a variety of items for children to build while learning about the fundamentals of engineering. The program begins at 3:30p.m. in the multi-purpose room at Iron House Elementary School, 4801 Frank Hengel Way, Oakley. This program runs 45 – 50 minutes so participants who arrive late will not have a chance to build every item.

Wednesday, April 22nd: Do You Sense It?
The Oakley Youth Advisory Council is hosting this new workshop to teach children about the 5 senses of sight, hearing, taste, touch and smell. This will be a fun workshop with a variety of activities. The program will begin at 4:00p.m. at the Oakley Recreation Buildings, 1250 O’Hara Avenue, Oakley.

Thursday, April 23rd: Poopology
East Bay Regional Park District staff will lead this program to teach children how to identify the scat (poop) from a wide variety of wildlife that make Northern California their home. This program will begin at 3:30p.m. at the Big Break Visitor Center, 69 Big Break Road, Oakley. This program runs 45 – 55 minutes so participants who arrive late may not have an opportunity to experience all the activities.

Friday, April 24th: Reptile Kingdom
Python Ron is back for another fascinating seminar about a wide variety of reptiles. He’ll have about 20 different species of snakes, lizards, turtles and even some insects on hand. The program will begin at 3:30p.m. at Civic Center Plaza, 3231 Main Street.

Saturday, April 25: Extreme Delta, Celebrating the Earth and Clean Water
Join us on the last day of Science Week for this enlightening program. The Delta Science Center, Ironhouse Sanitary District and the Diablo Water District will host this workshop with several hands-on activities and giveaways for the children. Free hayrides will be offered. This program will take place at Ironhouse Sanitary District, 450 Walnut Meadows Drive in Oakley from 10:00a.m. – 2:00p


Mt-Diablo-RecylingApril 25: Mt. Diablo Recycling Hosts 3rd Annual Funtastic Family Earth Day Celebration
Earth Day is not just a once a year holiday for Mt. Diablo Recycling (MDR), a division of recycling and resource recovery company Garaventa Enterprises, though it does highlight a reason to celebrate with the Contra Costa County community. MDR’s 3rd Annual Funtastic Family Earth Day Celebration on April 25 offers free family fun!

The Funtastic Family Earth Day Celebration includes a choice between two separate two-hour sessions (10 a.m. to 12 noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.) taking place, for free, at the MDR facility located at 1300 Loveridge Road in Pittsburg, Calif. Each session includes a tour of MDR’s 90,000-square-foot recycling facility where participants will learn about the “Big Blue” and “Big Wall-e” recycling machines, an interactive education lesson about the 5 R’s (Reduce-Reuse-Recycle-Respect-Recover), recycling games, and a take home pile of compost. Families can also take pictures with the Recycling Guy and with recycling trucks.

Special-Kids-FoundationMay 2: Special Kids Foundation: Wine, Chocolate & Beer Festival
The Special Kids Foundation will be hosting their 9th Annual Wine, Chocolate, and Beer Festival at Leer Vineyards on Saturday May 2, 2015. The event will be held from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The event will feature a variety of wines and brews from the region and an opportunity to socialize with guests. Chocolatiers from throughout the Bay Area will be on hand to provide tastes of their specialties, and light hors d’oeuvres are available, as well.

Attendees can enjoy dancing to a live band, placing tickets to earn one of a number of raffle prizes, or bidding on our selection of silent and live auction items. Money raised at this event goes to support local programs that directly benefit special needs children and families in East Contra Costa County.

Tickets are $45 through April 1 or $50 after. If tickets are available on the day of the event, they are $60 at the door.

Hook and ladder runJune 7: Hook & Ladder Run
The Livermore-Pleasanton Firefighters Foundation has announced that registration is now open for the 7th Annual Hook and Ladder Run, Sunday June 7st at Wente Vineyards.

Register before April 30th to receive the lowest pricing and all registration will be closed by May 29th. Like last year, we will offering the ability for all participants to fundraise or donate additional money when you sign up. Just like your registration fee, 100% of the money raised/donated goes directly to helping others. Last year we were able to distribute over $25,000 dollars to:

  • Injured and fallen firefighters, police officers and ems workers
  • Burn victims and the burn foundation
  • Local Charities in the Tri Valley
