April 11: Delta Veterans Group to Honor Area Vietnam Veterans
On April 11th 2015, the Delta Veterans Group will honor Vietnam Veterans who both fought for and died for our country at a BBQ in their honor.

The BBQ will take place at the Antioch Historical Society – 1500 West 4th St Antioch CA 94509. Posting of Colors will start at 11:30am and John Amie, Vietnam Veteran and member of Veterans of Oakley, is the guest speaker.

All ticket sales will go to funding the Stand Down on the Delta 2015, which will take place on Sept 11-14th 2015 at the Contra Costa County fairgrounds in Antioch. There will be music and plenty of food. DasBotics of Concord will have 3D printed items available to purchase, including cell phone cases and other items (a percentage of the sales will go to DVG operating fund).

Tickets are $20 on the day of the event, but $15 tickets can be purchased up to April 10th at VFW 6435 – 815 Fulton Shipyard, Antioch CA 94509. Families can also purchase tickets that provide a family of up to 5 with entry and food. They can be purchased for $40 at VFW 6435 before April 10th, and $45 at the day of the event.

April 11: The New Oakley Library — Book It Run
The Friends of the Oakley Library are hosting the second annual Book It Run, Saturday April 11, 2015 to promote the building of a new library for Oakley.  There will be a 10K, 5K,  and a 1K Run/Walk around the lake plus a FREE Kids Fun Run Electronic chip timing will be provided by the Freedom High Athletic Department for the 5k and 10k.  A Free T-shirt and medallion will be given to all registered in our 1k, 5k, and 10k before 4/3/2015.  Free books to the first 250 kids entered in the Kids Fun Run.  Sign up for Kids Fun Run at the park on the day of the run before 10:00.  The Kids Fun Run starts at 10:00. April 11: 2015 Contra Costa County Teacher/Certificated Staff Recruitment Fair
The Contra Costa County Office of Education (CCCOE) will present its annual Contra Costa County Teacher/Certificated Staff Recruitment Fair, on Saturday, April 11, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, at the Pittsburg High School gymnasium, 1750 Harbor St., in Pittsburg.

Attendees will discover a number of teaching positions in a variety of fields, including all levels of K-12 education, specialty, and substitute teaching positions. Representatives of some of these open positions will be offering interviews on site.

Along with the CCCOE, representatives from eight Contra Costa County school districts will be on hand: Clayton Valley Charter HS, John Swett USD, Liberty UHSD, Martinez USD, Mt. Diablo USD, Pittsburg USD, San Ramon Valley USD, and West Contra Costa USD. In addition, members from Brandman University and UC. Berkeley Extension will be on hand to talk about earning teaching credentials and their teaching programs.

April 11-May 2: Lynn House Gallery Exhibit “Through MY Lens”
The Arts & Cultural Foundation of Antioch is proud to present the first photography only exhibit, “Through My Lens”, which will feature 35 photographers at the Lynn House Gallery from April 11th – May 2nd, 2015. Meet the photographers at the free artist reception on April 11th from 2-4 PM.

It was not a surprise that the exhibit’s Call for Artists was filled within two days of posting as photography has become one of the fastest growing hobbies, as well as having commercial applications. Photography is considered as one of the rare hobbies that you can easily learn and digital art expression is fast, easy and provides immediate satisfaction. Don’t miss this opportunity to enjoy photos of people, places and things by community members.

Delta Tactical Training Group 07April 12: Women’s Basic Civilian Handgun Safety Training
Class Cost: $120.00 + $10.00 range fee
Class Time: 8 hours, 9 AM to 1 PM/Range Time: 2 PM to 4 PM
Class Location: 2504 Verne Roberts Circle, Suite #103, Antioch, CA 94509
Materials Needed: 50 rounds of ammunition and eye/ear protection

If you have little to no experience with handguns, this is the class for you. You will learn about the basic safety and responsibilities that come with owning and operating a handgun. This class teaches general safety rules, range rules, basic gun laws and transportation and storage of a firearm.

Join the fun and make a difference in your community on Saturday, April 18th; volunteer for 5th Annual Antioch’s Keep Antioch Beautiful event, from 8:30 – 11 AM. Following the cleanup, there will be a free volunteer lunch at East Bay Regional Contra Loma Park from 11:30AM – 1 PM.

The effort continues on Saturday, April 18th, with 12 check-in locations. Schools and students will be competing for participation prize money for their schools. There are 3 prizes, $500 for 1st Place, $300 for 2nd Place and $200 for 3rd Place, with prizes awarded to each level of high, middle and elementary schools – that’s $3,000 in participation prizes!Participation is not limited to students to count towards prizes; parents, grandparents, friends, etc. can register their efforts for an individual school. We count everyone who is working if they state a school to credit – not just students! Volunteers who check in at a school site will be cleaning up the neighborhoods surrounding their campuses as well as their campuses.

On Saturday April 18, a local law enforcement motorcycle club will host the annual Mike “Bear Cub” Truitt Memorial Ride. The proceeds from the event will benefit the Mike Truitt Memorial Scholarship Fund at Los Medanos College. This is a scholarship for students who wish to go into law enforcement to attend the academy at Los Medanos College.

The ride is open to all types of motorcycles and cars and this is a not-for-profit event with all proceeds going to the scholarship.

The Sacred Sons Motorcycle Club will be meeting at 8:30 am in front of the Antioch Police Department at 300 L Street when registration begins and at 10:00 am they will head to Ironstone Winery in Murphy’s. The event is $25.00 per person which includes lunch at Ironstone.

Truitt was an Antioch Police Officer for 25-years and died of cancer in December 2005. For more information on the event contact Mike Schneider (925) 972-6461.

YMWO-MonumnetApril 18: You Me We = Oakley Monument Unveiling
The Council and public are invited to the unveiling of the YMWO bronze monument! A short program will take place on Saturday, April 18th at 5:00 p.m. at the Downtown Plaza. Join Project Committee Members ( Board‐ representatives from the partner institutions‐ IIBA, OUSD, Freedom High/LUHSD, St. Anthonys, Oakley P.D. ) and
volunteer Ambassadors as we unveil the sculpture and student artwork ( now converted to ceramic tiles). The children whose are will adorn the plaza, complimenting the monument will be recognized.

At 6:00 p.m. folks are invited to walk across the street to the “Roads of Oakley” Art Exhibit opening reception. The reception will commence with a brief program recognizing the top pieces.

Sunday, April 19th: Delta Science in Action
The Delta Science Center and the East Bay Regional Park District are hosting this exciting workshop that will include a variety of hands-on activities for children to learn about the waters and the wildlife that make the Delta their home. The program will run from 10:00a.m. – 1:00p.m. at the Big Break Visitor Center patio, 69 Big Break Road, Oakley

Monday, April 20th: Mad Science
The fun staff from Mad Science of Mt. Diablo will be on hand to assist children in a variety of science experiments. Children will learn how magnets work and learn about sonic sounds. The “Science of Toys” will teach children how to relate to science through toys. This workshop will start at 3:30p.m. at Laurel Elementary School, 1141 Laurel Road, Oakley. The program runs 45 – 50 minutes so participants who arrive late may not have a chance to stop by each activity.

Tuesday, April 21st: Lego Engineering
Lego Engineering is one of the most popular activities during Science Week. The skilled staff at Bricks 4 Kids will have a variety of items for children to build while learning about the fundamentals of engineering. The program begins at 3:30p.m. in the multi-purpose room at Iron House Elementary School, 4801 Frank Hengel Way, Oakley. This program runs 45 – 50 minutes so participants who arrive late will not have a chance to build every item.

Wednesday, April 22nd: Do You Sense It?
The Oakley Youth Advisory Council is hosting this new workshop to teach children about the 5 senses of sight, hearing, taste, touch and smell. This will be a fun workshop with a variety of activities. The program will begin at 4:00p.m. at the Oakley Recreation Buildings, 1250 O’Hara Avenue, Oakley.

Thursday, April 23rd: Poopology
East Bay Regional Park District staff will lead this program to teach children how to identify the scat (poop) from a wide variety of wildlife that make Northern California their home. This program will begin at 3:30p.m. at the Big Break Visitor Center, 69 Big Break Road, Oakley. This program runs 45 – 55 minutes so participants who arrive late may not have an opportunity to experience all the activities.

Friday, April 24th: Reptile Kingdom
Python Ron is back for another fascinating seminar about a wide variety of reptiles. He’ll have about 20 different species of snakes, lizards, turtles and even some insects on hand. The program will begin at 3:30p.m. at Civic Center Plaza, 3231 Main Street.

Saturday, April 25: Extreme Delta, Celebrating the Earth and Clean Water
Join us on the last day of Science Week for this enlightening program. The Delta Science Center, Ironhouse Sanitary District and the Diablo Water District will host this workshop with several hands-on activities and giveaways for the children. Free hayrides will be offered. This program will take place at Ironhouse Sanitary District, 450 Walnut Meadows Drive in Oakley from 10:00a.m. – 2:00p

Join the Heritage High School for a special concert on Friday April 24 where proceeds will be donated to the Villalpando Family in support of Peter Villalpando and his courageous fight against cancer.

The guest artist will be Richard Conway, PhD – Trumpet Player—and the concert will begin at 7:00 pm at the HHS Theater. General admission is just $10 and $5 for students. Tickets are sold at the door.


Mt-Diablo-RecylingApril 25: Mt. Diablo Recycling Hosts 3rd Annual Funtastic Family Earth Day Celebration
Earth Day is not just a once a year holiday for Mt. Diablo Recycling (MDR), a division of recycling and resource recovery company Garaventa Enterprises, though it does highlight a reason to celebrate with the Contra Costa County community. MDR’s 3rd Annual Funtastic Family Earth Day Celebration on April 25 offers free family fun!

The Funtastic Family Earth Day Celebration includes a choice between two separate two-hour sessions (10 a.m. to 12 noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.) taking place, for free, at the MDR facility located at 1300 Loveridge Road in Pittsburg, Calif. Each session includes a tour of MDR’s 90,000-square-foot recycling facility where participants will learn about the “Big Blue” and “Big Wall-e” recycling machines, an interactive education lesson about the 5 R’s (Reduce-Reuse-Recycle-Respect-Recover), recycling games, and a take home pile of compost. Families can also take pictures with the Recycling Guy and with recycling trucks.

Liberty-High-Booster-LobsteMay 1: Liberty High School Athletic Booster Club Lobster Fest

In an effort to raise funds, the Liberty High Booster Club will be hosting its 1st Annual Liberty Booster Club Lobster Fest Fundraiser Dinner on May 1, 2015.

The event will be held at Brownstone Gardens in Oakley, located at 91 Brownstone Dr. The event is limited to 300 tickets which are $80 per person. The dinner includes a whole Maine Lobster with all the fixings in a southern broil family style dinner.

The event will begin at 6:00 pm with no host cocktails (coaches are bartenders) followed by dinner and dancing. The event will conclude around 11:00 pm.

Special-Kids-FoundationMay 2: Special Kids Foundation: Wine, Chocolate & Beer Festival
The Special Kids Foundation will be hosting their 9th Annual Wine, Chocolate, and Beer Festival at Leer Vineyards on Saturday May 2, 2015. The event will be held from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The event will feature a variety of wines and brews from the region and an opportunity to socialize with guests. Chocolatiers from throughout the Bay Area will be on hand to provide tastes of their specialties, and light hors d’oeuvres are available, as well.

Attendees can enjoy dancing to a live band, placing tickets to earn one of a number of raffle prizes, or bidding on our selection of silent and live auction items. Money raised at this event goes to support local programs that directly benefit special needs children and families in East Contra Costa County.

Hook and ladder runJune 7: Hook & Ladder Run
The Livermore-Pleasanton Firefighters Foundation has announced that registration is now open for the 7th Annual Hook and Ladder Run, Sunday June 7st at Wente Vineyards.

Register before April 30th to receive the lowest pricing and all registration will be closed by May 29th. Like last year, we will offering the ability for all participants to fundraise or donate additional money when you sign up. Just like your registration fee, 100% of the money raised/donated goes directly to helping others. Last year we were able to distribute over $25,000 dollars to:

  • Injured and fallen firefighters, police officers and ems workers
  • Burn victims and the burn foundation
  • Local Charities in the Tri Valley
