East Contra Costa Firefighters Raise Nearly $10k During Oakley Fill the Boot

On Friday, East Contra Costa Firefighters took to City of Oakley streets to help raise funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association for Fill the Boot.

Battling cold and wind, firefighters raised just under $10,000 with a total of $9820.22 per Tom LoCoco. They were positioned at Main Street and Vintage Parkway in Oakley.

For the year, the Unified Professional Firefighters raised more than $40,000 within Contra Costa County.

Earlier this summer, the United Professional Firefighters of Contra Costa County as a whole raised a combined $33,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) across multiple locations in the county—including Antioch and Brentwood.

east-contra-costa-firefighters-fill-the-boot-img_8583In both Antioch and Brentwood, firefighters raised more than $18,700 with East Contra Costa Fire raising $10,613.

The Muscular Dystrophy Association is the world’s leading nonprofit health agency dedicated to finding treatments and cures for muscular dystrophy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and other neuromuscular diseases.

How Fill the Boot Helps?

Every year, tens of thousands of people visit MDA’s nationwide network of 200 clinics, including 44 MDA/ALS centers, where they receive expert care from muscle disease specialists. MDA also provides annual occupational, physical, respiratory or speech therapy consultations.

Each year, MDA sends more than 3,600 youngsters with muscular dystrophy to accessible MDA summer camps across the country, at a cost to MDA of $1600 per camper. There is no charge to families.
