East Bay Regional Park District Fishing Derby Gives Special Needs Kids a Chance to Fish

The East Bay Regional Park District hosted its 19th Annual Fishing Derby for Special Kids yesterday at Contra Loma Regional Park Thursday where 154 kids from 6 schools participated in fishing and activities.

Students from Mission Elementary, Turner County Special Programs, Brentwood Elementary, Krey Elementary, Los Medanos, Heights Elementary attended the event.

To help make the event a success, financial sponsors included Ask.com while the Antioch Lions Club provided breakfast for the volunteers and lunch for all. The Mt. Lassen Trout Farm who donated 1,000 lbs of fish to be placed in the reservoir for the kids to catch.

Assemblyman Jim Frazier was on hand to provide certificates to the many volunteers and simply take in the enjoyment of watching special needs kids get to perform activities like other kids.

“Today was not about me, it was about watching these kids get to fish and I can sit back and take joy in seeing them do things that I used to do as a kid,” said Frazier.
