Dyslexic Kids and Their Families Come Together to Honor Assemblyman Frazier

by ECT

Decoding Dyslexia CA will honor Assemblyman Jim Frazier, D-Oakley for championing new state dyslexia laws at a special Valentine’s party in Brentwood. The ceremony will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, 2016, at The Game Sports Pub ’n’ Pizza, 235 Oak St., Brentwood.

Frazier’s heroic efforts resulted in the passage of Assembly Bill 1369, which was signed into law by the governor last October. California is required to develop program guidelines for dyslexia by the 2017/18 academic school year. In addition, as of January 1, 2016, phonological processing was added to the list of psychological processes. Phonological processing is a common deficit in children who are dyslexic.

The idea for the bill was born in a Brentwood pizza parlor when Frazier met Decoding Dyslexia CA’s Principal Leader, Tobie Meyer, a Brentwood mom whose dyslexic son was struggling in school.

Meyer states, “Assemblyman Frazier did not hesitate in authoring a dyslexia bill when I shared the struggles of dyslexic students and their families in California. The kids were a big part of the lobbying efforts in getting this bill passed and they wanted to be able to personally thank Assemblyman Frazier for giving them a voice.”

Up to 20% of the population as a whole exhibits some of the symptoms of dyslexia, including slow or inaccurate reading, poor spelling, poor writing, or mixing up similar words. Thanks to legislation like AB 1369, California schools will be better prepared to provide students with the help they need.
