Updated: BART Police Officer Dies In The Line of Duty

While performing a probation search Tuesday at a residence in Dublin, a BART police officer as died. The shooting occurred around 1:03 pm at an apartment complex on Dougherty Road and Park Sierra according to BART officials.

BART Police Officer Dies In The Line of Duty BART Police Chief Kenton Rainey and BART General Manager Grace Crunican issued the following statement:

“BART has been informed that one of our officers has died from wounds sustained during a shooting earlier today. The entire BART organization is deeply saddened by this tragic event and we ask the public to keep the officer’s family in its thoughts and prayers.”

At 1:03 pm a BART Police officer who was doing a probation search in the City of Dublin was shot. The officer was transported to a local hospital and died from his injuries. The identity of the officer is not being released at this time. The investigation has been taken over by the Dublin Police Department.

No further details are being released at this time.

Update 4:28 pm:
The officer was accidentally shot by a colleague while serving the warrant at 1:03 p.m. an apartment complex on Dougherty Road, Sgt. J.D. Nelson of the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office said.

Update 5:51 pm:

BART Police Chief Kenton Rainey issued the following update on today’s tragic death of a BART Police Officer:

“Today’s tragedy was the first death of an officer in the line of duty in the history of the BART Police Department. While performing a probation search, one BART police officer accidentally shot another officer who later died from the injury. The officers were following up on a crime committed on BART property. The Dublin Police Department (which contracts with the Alameda County Sheriff’s Department) has taken over the investigation and no further details are available at this time.”

Both Chief Rainey and General Manager Grace Crunican have visited with the officer’s family to provide condolences and offer support. The identity of the officer has not yet been released.

My heart goes out to his family and the entire law enforcement community. I am sooo sorry for your loss!!!! Oh Heavenly Father, I pray for blessings of Your devine love for the Offiicer, his family and fellow officers as they go through this most difficult time!!!
Bless all of those close to him with an inner peace in their hearts, minds, and souls.

Bart Police are sworn officers; no different from city or county cops. “Maybe it is time Bart Police only have tasers”, typical knee jerk reaction.

I’m sorry brother ECV.I just finished watching Fruitvale Station the day before.You know the first accidental homicide? I don’t read any other law enforcement agency having two manslaughters with a gun in such a short time frame. Maybe the state needs to review their operations and training. I’ll jerk my knee while you jerk yourself. Have a nice day.
