Discovery Bay: Supervisor Piepho Issues Statement on PG&E Gas Outage

by ECT

The following statement was issued by Contra Costa County Supervisor Mary Nejedly Piepho regarding the outage to 6,200 residents who are without gas until Monday evening.

December 27, 2015 at 4:50 p.m.

Dear Constituents,

PGE has recently confirmed to me an extensive gas power outage for as many as 6,200 residents in the Discovery Bay area. They have informed me that we should plan for being without gas (electricity not affected) until tomorrow night.

PGE-outage-Discovery-BayThis means those of us with gas heaters, gas water heaters, gas stoves, gas fire places, and other gas reliant appliances need to make plans to be without them for the next 24 hours.

PGE is opening up warming locations. The first one is open and located at Timber Point Elementary School 40 Newberry Lane, Discovery Bay. PGE staff is currently arriving to assist with support.

They also advised to residents to call 911 immediately, then call PG&E at 1-800-743-5002 if you should smell a natural gas odor.

ACCORDING TO PGE:

If you smell gas, get everyone outside immediately to a location upwind where you no longer can smell natural gas, and call 911 immediately, then call PG&E at 1-800-743-5002. If you smell gas, do not use electrical switches, appliances or telephones, because sparks can ignite gas. Do not check for a gas leak with a match or an open flame.

If you are able to do so safely, shut off the gas at the main service valve using a 12- to 15-inch adjustable pipe or crescent-type wrench or other suitable tool. The valve is normally located near your gas meter. If you shut off the gas, do not attempt to turn it back on yourself.

To report a gas outage, please call 1-800-743-5002. When you call, tell us if you’d like to receive restoration updates by text or automated call.

PGE has dispatched gas crews to several locations in the Discovery Bay area. PG&E gas service representatives will be going door-to-door in some locations, asking customers for access to their property to conduct pilot light tests. These tests should be brief, and we appreciate our customers’ assistance in helping us perform these tests.

PG&E employees always carry their identification and are always willing to show it to you. Customers should always ask to see valid identification before allowing anyone claiming to be a PG&E representative inside their home.

If a person claiming to be a PG&E employee has identification and you still feel uncomfortable, call PG&E’s customer service line at 1-800-743-5000 to verify PG&E’s presence in the community.

Thanks Mary! The information is very helpful. Gas has been off all day and it’s getting pretty cold. PGE messaging has been confusing. They need to get their act together.
