Discovery Bay: Teen Charged in Stabbing Death Competent to Stand Trial

by ECT

A Contra Costa County Judge declared William Shultz, 18, competent to stand trial for the stabbing death of a 9-year-old boy on April 24 in Discovery Bay.

After reviewing reports from two doctors, Judge Terri Mockler declared Shultz competent to stand trial.

The trial had been suspended as the courts appointed two psychologists to determine if he was able to comprehend criminal proceedings. In fact, a competency trial was scheduled for Sept. 28, where a jury of 12 would have determined Shultz competency, but the defense withdrew their complaint on Sept. 23.

Shultz is scheduled to return to court for a probable cause hearing on Nov. 3 in Pittsburg to determine whether or not to hold Shultz for trial.

Here is the chargers per a April 28 Press Release from the Sheriffs Office

An 18-year-old has been charged with murder with a special circumstance enhancement in the death of a 9-year-old Discovery Bay boy, however, he will not face the death penalty.

Investigators say Shultz stabbed 9-year-old Jordan Almgren early Sunday morning on the 1900 block of Frost Way in Discovery Bay.  Shultz is known to the victim’s family and was staying at the home on a sleepover. Detectives believe at some point during the early morning, he attacked Almgren for unknown reasons. Detectives are still trying to establish a motive.

A day before the stabbing  at about 11 AM, Deputies were dispatched to Shultz’s residence in Discovery Bay and requested by his family to evaluate Shultz’s mental health status. During this contact, Deputies determined that Shultz did not meet the criteria as defined in Welfare and Institutions Code 5150.
