On Dec. 11, Contra Costa County sheriff’s deputies arrested Fernando Trujillo, 42, at his Bay Point home for allegedly shooting and killing 45-year-old Dwayne Askew in Barstow in 1995.
According to the release, BPD officers responded to a report of a gunshot victim in the 300 block of Melissa Street shortly after midnight on May 30, 1995. Askew was found lying in the street suffering from a gunshot wound to his head and was treated at the scene and then transported to Barstow Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
On Dec. 12, BPD detectives traveled to Martinez to interview Trujillo at the Martinez Detention Facility and was brought to Barstow to be charged with murder and street terrorism charges, the release states.
Trujillo is currently in custody at West Valley Detention Center in lieu of $1 million bail, booking records show.

Deputy Sheriffs Arrest Suspect in 18-Year-Old Barstow Cold Case Homicide
The Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff recently received information that Fernando Trujillo was wanted in connection with an 18-year-old cold case homicide that occurred in Barstow. Trujillo was believed to be in Contra Costa County.
The Investigation Division sent out a flyer with the information to local law enforcement agencies.
A Deputy Sheriff assigned to the Office of the Sheriff J-Team saw the flyer and recalled previously arresting Trujillo. The J-Team is a specialized unit within the Office of the Sheriff Patrol Division.
J-Team Deputies began an investigation to try to locate Trujillo who had several addresses. They were able to connect him to a residence in the unincorporated community of Bay Point.
On December 12, 2013, at about 12:30 AM, J-Team Deputies went to an apartment complex in Bay Point and arrested Trujillo. He was booked into the Martinez Detention Facility.
