 What:

Every third Saturday in September, Californians join together to take part in the State’s largest annual volunteer event, California Coastal Cleanup Day. Families, friends, coworkers, scout troops, school groups, service clubs, businesses and individuals celebrate and share their appreciation of California’s fabulous coast and waterways by supporting and participating in cleanup events, including numerous locations in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta.  In 2012, more than65,000 volunteers removed almost 770,000 pounds of trash and recyclables from California’s beaches, lakes, and waterways ,covering over 2,400 miles of coastline and inland shoreline in 52 counties around the state. In the Delta region alone, 9,398 volunteers collected almost 128,527 pounds of trash and recyclables.

The statewide event is a program of the California Coastal Commission, and sponsored by entities like the Delta Protection Commission (DPC) in  partnership with local groups in each County who recruit and support volunteers.

This year’s call to action is “Let’s Make Trash Extinct”, and the DPC is committed to that goal as part of their overarching mission to  preserve, protect and enhance the agricultural, habitat and recreational resources of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta.

The DPC is proud to have sponsored Cleanup sites in the Delta for nearly a decade. Waterway cleanups are a last line of defense to prevent debris from causing harm to oceans, wildlife, and water-based recreational areas. Waterways are collecting spots for trash from city streets and highways, traveling via inland waterways, storm drains, sewers, and on the wind.

This year, the Delta Conservancy and Bridgestone’s One Team One Planet are also sponsoring additional sites in the Delta, including a tire recycling opportunity for illegally dumped tires at Brannan Island.

DPC Site Partners:

  • City of Sacramento, Council Member Darrell Fong’s Office
  • Friends of the Marsh Creek Watershed
  • Friends of the Sacramento River Parkway
  • Iglesia ni Cristo
  • San Joaquin County Storm water Program
  • Sandy Beach Park, Rio Vista
  • Stockton Rowing Club
  • Solano County Parks and Recreation
  • Yolo County Parks

Back ground info:

The DPC, created under the 1992 Delta Protection Act, is a State Commission comprised of 15 members representing Delta cities and counties, reclamation districts and water agencies, and State departments. The Commission provides a forum for Delta residents to engage in decisions regarding actions to recognize and enhance the unique cultural, recreation, and agricultural resources of the Delta.

The DPC meets every other month at locations throughout the Delta. Meeting notices and other information about the Commission is available at www.delta.ca.gov or by calling (916) 375-4800.
