Contra Costa: Wind Warning, Flood Advisory Issued

Just before 4:00 pm Wednesday, the National Weather Service issued a severe weather alert warning of wind and a urban and small stream flood advisory for Contra Costa County and parts of the Bay Area.

The wind warning is in effect through Thursday at 1:00 am.

According to the alert, a flood advisory has been issued through 8:15 pm for in San Francisco Bay Area which includes:

  • Napa County in northern California…
  • Sonoma County in northern California…
  • Santa Clara County in northern California…
  • Santa Cruz County in northern California…
  • Alameda County in northern California…
  • San Francisco County in northern California…
  • Marin County in northern California…
  • Central Contra Costa County in northern California…
  • San Mateo County in northern California…

At 3:42 pm a trained weather spotter reported heavy rain causing minor roadway flooding over northern Healdsburg. Highway  Patrol reports roadway flooding on Highway 17 near Los Gatos and  West San Jose.

Additional roadway flooding is very likely in the  typical poor drainage areas into this evening. Evening commuters  please use extra caution on the roadways as hazards like water ponding and localized flooding where water typically collects are  quite likely.

* Some locations that will experience flooding include…San Jose, San Francisco, Oakland, Fremont, Santa Rosa, Hayward,  Sunnyvale, Concord, Santa Clara, Berkeley, Richmond, Daly City, San  Mateo, San Leandro, Livermore, Napa, Redwood City, Mountain View,  Alameda and San Ramon.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

Runoff from heavy rainfall will cause rises on small creeks and streams, localized flooding in urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other drainage areas and low lying spots.

Move away from recently burned areas. Heavy rains may trigger rockslides, mudslides and debris flows in steep terrain, especially in and around these areas.

Please report flooding to your local law enforcement agency when you can do so safely.

A Flood Advisory means river or stream flows are or will become elevated, or ponding of water in urban or other areas is occurring or is imminent.
