A Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Deputy died Thursday in a drowning while trying to save another person in Lake Tahoe.

According to Contra Costa County Sheriffs spokesperson Jimmy Lee, the Sheriffs Office was informed by South Lake Tahoe Police that that Deputy Sheriff Carlos Francies died in an apparent drowning accident at Lake Tahoe.

According to police officials there, he jumped into deep lake water to save another person who was apparently drowning and then succumbed himself.

“Today we lost a dedicated Deputy Sheriff and a member of our family,” said Contra Costa Sheriff David O. Livingston. “Deputy Carlos Francies died doing what he was sworn to do: putting himself in harms way to protect the lives of others. He is a hero and an example of exactly what is right in law enforcement today. We mourn with his family, friends and colleagues.”

According to Lee, the Sheriff’s Office is still gathering information on what happened. A team is currently headed to Lake Tahoe. The investigation will be headed by local law enforcement.
