Contra Costa Animal Services’ “May Day” Promotion Seeks to Alleviate Crowded Shelter

$5.00 adoption fee, free dog training classes for all dogs over 24lbs. adopted during the first week of May

Martinez, CA – Contra Costa County Animal Services Department will be offering a special “May Day” promotion during the first week of May in an effort to help find homes for the overwhelming number of dogs that have contributed to the overcrowding of the County’s shelters. During the first week of May, the adoption fee for all dogs over 24lbs. will be reduced to $5.00. Additionally, the Department will be providing free dog training classes for all dogs over 24lbs. that are adopted between May 1st and May 7th.

“This promotion is aptly named,” says Supervisor Candace Andersen, Chair of the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors. “Our County shelters are at capacity so we’re sending out a mayday call with the hope of finding homes for the many lovable animals that are in our County’s care. If you’ve been thinking of adopting, there’s no better time to come and meet some of the amazing dogs we have at our County shelters in Martinez and Pinole.”

Under the leadership of Director Beth Ward, Contra Costa County Animal Services Department has placed an increased emphasis on lifesaving. Through development of stronger partnerships with local animal welfare groups and implementation of new policies and procedures, the Department’s live release rate has reached an all-time high. As a result, the County’s shelters are becoming overcrowded due to the fact that the Department is housing animals much longer than in previous years.

“Saving lives is not easy work,” says Ward. “While we’re very proud of the improvements we’ve made in improving our Department’s live release rate, the flip side to that equation is that your shelter inventory is naturally going to increase. Creative promotions, such as our May Day promotion, are great ways to remove some of the barriers that prevent people from adopting, while also helping us to reduce the number of residents in our shelters.”

Contra Costa County Animal Services Department is the largest animal welfare organization in Contra Costa County. The department operates two shelters, in Martinez and Pinole, where they provide high-quality animal care services, shelter homeless, abandoned and lost animals, place animals in safe, caring homes, and provide education and services to enhance the lives of people and their animal companions. Additionally, the department’s Field Services Division plays a crucial role in protecting the health and safety of all people and animals in our community through enforcement of state and laws, protecting the public from animal injury and working to prevent animal cruelty, abuse and neglect.
