Concord Police Officer, K9, Struck by Suspected DUI Driver

by ECT

A suspected drunk driver crashed into a Concord Police patrol vehicle this morning around 2 a.m. The collision occurred in the area of Sunshine Dr. and Meadow Lane.

The Concord Police Officer involved in the collision was injured, but his injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Here is a statement made by Concord Police:

Officers were on Meadow Ln near Leland Way investigating a DUI collision at 2:00 AM this morning. Both sides of Meadow Ln were closed with CPD patrol vehicles; emergency lights and flares. K-9 Officer Coniglio was near the intersection of Leland Way controlling this intersection of Meadow Ln.

Officer Coniglio was standing near the front of his patrol vehicle maintaining his flare pattern when he heard a GMC truck accelerating from the direction of Sunshine Dr. Officer Coniglio realized that the truck was not going to stop.

Officer Coniglio was concerned that K-9 Hancock was inside his vehicle and was in harms way. Officer Coniglio jumped in his patrol vehicle and was able to move his vehicle approx 2′ before the suspect vehicle collided into the driver side of his patrol vehicle. K-9 Officer Coniglio and K-9 Hancock were transported to respective hospitals.

They were both treated for moderate injuries and released.

It’s with certainty that we know if Officer Coniglio was not able to move his patrol vehicle, he and K-9 Hancock would have sustained serious injury or death. The suspect was arrested for suspicion of DUI. He was treated medically and housed at Martinez Detention Facility.

K-9 Officer Coniglio and Hancock are both resting at home and doing well. Thank you to all the concerned citizens who called and sent cards this morning.

We have a wonderful community!

Obviously he wasn’t high, when we see officers we avoid them.
