Commitment: A Lifestyle Change to Healthy Living is a Mindset

As summer quickly approaches, there is still time to begin making a lifestyle change to ensure you fit into that perfect outfit and improve confidence through exercise and a healthy diet.

To help kick start a change for those looking for motivation and a comfortable setting, Mary Collins, OneRevolution, is offering free workouts at Brownstone Gardens each Saturday from 8:00 am to 9:00 am with the workout lasting roughly 30-minutes. The workout program includes P90X, P90X3, Les Mills Combat, Turbo Fire, 21 Day Fix, T25, Insanity, The Asylum.

The series is aimed to serve as a weekly meeting for those not only looking for a lifestyle change, but also just to get outdoors and have fun while shedding calories outside of a gym. The group also will share tips and suggestions on continuing throughout the week with working out.

Collins explained that when someone wishes to make that change to become healthy and begin a life transformation to shedding pounds or eating better, commitment is the ultimate first step.

“The first step is commitment. A lot of people try and get motivated and that is great, but I say motivation is overrated because it comes and goes,” explained Collins. “If you are committed, it’s like a marriage; you take a vow and commit to it. Even if you have a bad day, you are going to remain faithful to a healthy lifestyle. If you apply that to fitness, you will set a goal and achieve it because you commit.”

She further explained that no matter the goal, if you wake up in the morning you still work to achieve it if the commitment is there. Like a marriage, you do not one day wake up and decide to cheat on your partner, you stay married.

“If you take that attitude and apply it to a diet and exercise, you can achieve anything if you remain committed,” said Collins. “If you begin cheating on diet and exercise, you are no longer committed to it.”

Collins offered the following tips to help remain committed to a goal long after the motivation may fade:

  1. Write the goals down and place them in a spot you will see every day.
  2. Taking a before picture.
She suggests the the “oh my gosh” picture that encourages you to do something.
  3. Get a goal outfit (swimsuit or dress) this works well for women. Put it in plain sight.
  4. New gym clothes – having something fun to work out in.
  5. Join a program or activity that you like.
Collings explains this is very important because if you hate going to the gym then you should find something else to do. If you are not a gym rat, find other activities you will want to invest time and effort into. If one dislikes a treadmill like she does, why would you buy it and use it a few times and it ends up as a cloths hanger. If you prefer being outdoors, invest in better shoes, a bike, or other items.
  6. Sign up with free online app for tracking for calories and intake
  7. Find an accountability partner who you share each other’s goals but she cautioned that this only works if you can find the right partner. She cautions a lot of times, people are co-dependent on another and if one person quits so does the other. Find the right person who has similar goals but remember it’s ultimately on you to achieve you goals, not your partner. Remember, at the end of the day you cannot rely on someone else, you have to invest in yourself.

Even with tips, nothing will replace commitment and willpower explained Collins.

“Time is going to pass no matter how you choose to pass it so it’s better to invest your time where you know you will reach your goal. Instead of next year having that same weight loss goal, you can have new goals. Staying committed is a mindset and willpower. It’s not about the feel good feeling and fluff—that is motivation,” says Collins. “I can talk to anyone for 10-minutes and they will walk away feeling motivated. But when that alarm goes off at 5:00 am are you still motivated enough to get up and out of bed?”

An awesome piece. If I lived over the pond I would be at Brownstone Gardens every week without fail. These guys are awesome I came across them on Facebook and have become friends with them for sometime now. Always have great advice and am sure the Saturday sessions are filled with not only sweat but fun and laughter. I have participated in a virtual body combat session with them so anyone in the world can join them if they have one of the beach body programs and the time suits. Give it a go you won’t be disappointed.

Is this for beginners? Or will people who have been working out for a while get a good workout?
