City of Oakley Agrees to Sponsor Delta Fishing Tournaments in 2016

by ECT

The Oakley City Council on Tuesday voted unanimously to sponsor a series of fishing tournaments to be held at the Big Break Marina in Oakley.

In total, the council approved $7,500 for two Wild West Bass Trail tournaments and $1,500 for an eight tournament series by Dan’s Delta Outdoors (a store located in Oakley).

Oakley Mayor Kevin Romick highlighted how Oakley used to be really involved in these tournaments back before the economic crash and said this was a great thing for the local community.

“We used to do this a lot before the economic crash in 2008,” explained Romick. “Oakley was known as one of the best bass tournament spots on the west coast. We were busy all summer long and did what we could with the FLW and the demise of Big Break Marina was an unfortunate situation that forced the tournaments out of Oakley onto Bethel Island. But with the rejuvenated Big Break this is a opportunity for Oakley to get its name back on the map as one of the premier bass fishing places on the west coast. This is a great opportunity for us to take advantage of the incentives being presented by both tournament groups. Working with them is a great opportunity to re-invest ourselves.”

Last Year, Oakley helped sponsor a tournament at Russo’s Marina for the Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) with a $5,000 sponsorship. Seeing that it was on Bethel Island, the council last year directed staff to explore ways to sponsor fishing that were held in Oakley.

IMG_6241With Big Break Marina now under new ownership and upgrades being made to get the Marina back into pristine working condition, its starting to get more traffic and appealing to fisherman. In fall of 2015, the marina hosted the Dan’s Delta Outdoors Fall Striper Series fishing tournament series with events in September, October and November.

Dan Mathisen, owner of Dan’s Delta Outdoors, stated that Oakley loses a lot of business when the tournaments are held outside of Oakley and the closer the tournaments are to the downtown area, the better it is for everyone.

Mathisen said he hopes to bring in at least 100 boats per tournament which will bring traffic to not only his business, but other businesses in the area which brings in tax revenue.

“We wanted to bring it back to Oakley and Big Break Marina because it was the Bass Fishing Tournament center of the delta for a number of years. It has a great tradition and is the best venue for fishing in the delta,” said Mathisen. “With the upgrades being made, its going to be even better. I am confident that once fisherman see the upgraded facility, even more people will start coming back to this spot versus other areas across the delta. It’s all about a partnership between my store, the City of Oakley and Big Break Marina to create more exposure to Oakley. Everyone will win as Oakley will once again become a destination for fisherman.”

Councilwoman Vanessa Perry was thrilled to see Big Break Marina making all the improvements.

“It’s exciting to see big break improved and see these competitions coming,” said Perry. “It’s going to bring more people to Oakley and to our local businesses.”

Councilman Doug Hardcastle stated this type of sponsorship had been done for years before the city dropped off the sponsorship. He said it would help put Oakley back on the map.

“It does put Oakley back on the map as a fishing destination, so I am agreeable to this,” said Hardcastle. “It’s a good investment.”

That is a very wise investment, I have always loved fishing out of big break marina and the biggest benifit is there are local hotels very close by.

Sounds like a good way to bring business to Oakley.

That’s great and all but honestly Russo’s has done so much for the bass fishing industry and the bass fisherman personally that I would hate for any of the tournaments to be done anywhere else but there. I would feel awkward going to a different marina after all these years of russo’s accommodating us.
