CHP Officer Injured After Vehicle Makes “U-Turn”

by ECT

At 12:27 pm Saturday afternoon, a California Highway Patrol officer on a motorcycle was airlifted to a hospital with a head injury after hitting a car on Marsh Creek Road near Deer Valley Road in unincorporated Contra Costa County.

According to investigators, a vehicle made a “U-turn” in front of the officer, who couldn’t stop in time and t-boned the car.

According to a witness, the officer was wearing a helmet; however, he hit the concrete with so much force that knocked the helmet from his head—there were reports of blood coming from his head.

One of my sources informed me that they believed he will likely come out of it with a concussion.   The officer is expected to be released as early as Sunday.

The officer works out of the CHP office in Oakland and was helping police with the Amgen Tour of California.

According to East Contra Costa Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Jeff Burris, he shared that there was a slight delay due to all the CHP officers in the area of the incident trying to provide crowd control. Crews were able to approach the incident in one open lane, but two crew members had to be dropped off with equipment while the engine went down the road to park.

“We were delayed because we couldn’t park close as we could have because we had to leave a lane open for the cyclist,” said Burris. “Bikes were flying by about four feet from the accident. We were focused on the officer and don’t like to be delayed to help someone but sometimes you have to work within the confines of the scene and other organization’s needs.”

Burris did state that CHP made it possible to allow them to do their job with crowd control and making room for them to work within the event.

The investigation into the accident was still pending Saturday and no arrests were made.

It just goes to show that being Highway Patrolman is not an easy job. I did it for 27 years in California and could not think of another job that is so rewarding, that’s so exciting god bless that officer I pray he is 100 percent very soon.

I feel bad for the officer who hit the car but some of those officers on motorcycles and in cars were flying down Marsh Creek Rd at high rate of speed when the AMGEN tour was not near by for a good 20 minutes. Also residents did not know about the hour long road closure and people who were unaware of the roads because they wanted to go to Clayton were stopped and made to make u turns in the middle of the road by CHP officers.
