CHP: National Child Passenger Safety Week September 13-19

by ECT

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reminds all motorists to ensure children are secured in an appropriate car seat or seat belt, every time for every ride. Our children are our most precious cargo, and we must do everything we can to keep them safe.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has designated September 13-19, 2015 as the National Child Passenger Safety Week. During this week, CHP offices across the Bay Area will be conducting enhanced enforcement operations to detect seat belt and car seat violations, and will offer additional opportunities for free car seat inspections.

“Car crashes continue to be the leading cause of death for our children,” said Chief Paul Fontana of Golden Gate Division. “The CHP wants to do everything we can to ensure every child is safe on every ride. We encourage all parents and caregivers to schedule a free car seat inspection at their local CHP office.”

Current law requires all children to ride in the back seat, and to be secured in an appropriate car seat or booster seat until they reach 8 years of age or 4 feet 9 inches in height. The law requires all individuals age 8 and above to be properly secured in a seat belt at all times while in a vehicle.

IMG_3287According to NHTSA, nearly 60% of all car seats are installed incorrectly. Parents and guardians may contact any CHP office across the state to schedule a free car seat inspection. During these appointments, our trained Child Passenger Safety Technicians demonstrate how to properly install the car seat, and answer any and all questions about child passenger safety. Our primary goal is to ensure the safety of everyone on California’s roadways.

The following is a list of event dates and locations where the CHP will offer free car seat / booster seat inspection and installation demonstrations next week. You may also call any of our CHP offices to schedule an appointment at your convenience during regular business hours.
