At 6:26 pm, the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District was dispatched to a report of a vehicle crash at Byron Highway and Bruns Road in Byron.

Upon arrival, the incident was a fatality and shut down the roadway for 3-hours.

According to CHP:

On Monday evening, 5-22-2017 at approximately 1825 hours, Contra Costa CHP was advised of a collision in the area of J-4 (Byron Hwy) and Bruns Road. Once CHP arrived on scene, it was determined this was a three vehicle fatal collision.

The driver of a Pontiac sedan, a 58 yr old male out of Modesto, was traveling southbound on J-4 just south of Bruns Road, at 60 MPH according to witnesses. The driver of a Chevy Impala, a 45 yr old female out of Brentwood, was traveling northbound on J-4 approaching the Pontiac.

According to witnesses, the Pontiac began to weave and then crossed into the northbound lane of traffic directly into the path of the Chevy Impala. The Pontiac collided head on into the Chevy. After the impact, both vehicles continued in their initial direction of travel until they ran off the roadway onto the shoulder.

The driver of a Toyota Camry, a 25 yr old male out of Bay Point, was the car directly behind the Chevy and in order to avoid being struck by the Pontiac as well, he swerved to the right, ran off the roadway, and struck a power pole and concrete culvert.

The driver of the Pontiac suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the Chevy suffered moderate non-life threatening injuries and was transported by ambulance to a local hospital. The Toyota driver and his passenger did not suffer any injuries.

The roadway was closed for nearly 3 hours for the fatal collision investigation.

This is an ongoing investigation and it’s unknown if alcohol or drugs were involved in the collision at this time. If anyone has any further information regarding this incident, please contact Contra Costa CHP at 925-646-4980 and contact Officer Baumgartner, who is handling the investigation.
