VALLEJO, Calif. – The California Highway Patrol, Golden Gate Division would like to thank all of our allied agencies and the public for the tremendous effort put forth in the Bay Area during this Fourth of July holiday weekend. While there is still work to be done to remind the community to buckle up during every ride, to drive attentively, and to drive sober, we were very fortunate to have so many actively fight for #FreedomFromFatals.

The CHP is pleased to report that there were no fatal collisions in the Bay Area within CHP jurisdiction during the Independence Day weekend, from July 3, 2014, at 6:00 p.m. through July 6, 2014, at midnight.

“Although the number of fatal collisions last year was one, having zero is absolutely impactful,” said Golden Gate Division Chief Avery Browne. “It is a demonstration that working together we can absolutely make a difference. When we put down our cellphone and are attentive, when we obey the speed laws, when we buckle-up, and make driving safely a priority, we all win.”

The CHP also made 180 arrests (Editors Note: 22 in Contra Costa County) for driving under the influence during the holiday weekend this year, which was roughly equal to the amount of arrests made in 2013. Despite not experiencing fatal collisions during this holiday weekend, the number of DUI arrests proves that we must all work together to put an end to DUI.

We remind the community to always designate a sober driver, or use another method of transportation to get home, such as public transportation, taxi service, or a phone call to friends or family.

If you see a driver you believe to be under the influence, the CHP reminds the community to call 9-1-1. Please include the type of vehicle, the color, and the license plate information if possible. Together, we can put an end to DUI!
