Child on Bicycle Hit and Killed Near Excelsior Middle School

by ECT

According to California Highway Patrol (CHP) a 12-year-old boy on his bicycle was hit and killed Monday morning in Byron. At roughly 7:48 am, a black SUV hit the boy near Excelsior Middle School and pinned the child under the vehicle.

Emergency crews were dispatched as the incident has caused the road to be closed down in both directions.  CHP has requested a coroner while CHP the accident is still under investigation.

According to a source close the incident, the child’s parents of the boy who died arrived on scene shortly after the incident while the driver of the SUV was a parent of another child at the school who had just dropped off children t the school when she felt a bump under the vehicle.

CHP says the female driver is cooperating fully with the investigation.

Motorists are being advised to avoid the area this morning.

The family and loved ones of those involved in this mornings incident are in our prayers and as more information is made available,  we will update this article.

Update Via Battalion Chief report (11:22 am)

Engines 59 & 54 responded along with AMR, REACH-3 (Cancelled), CHP, CCC Sheriffs and Coroner. The incident required 7 ECCFPD Personnel. ECCFPD arrived to find a juvenile trapped under a vehicle. The scene was then secured by fire apparatus and law enforcement.

The patient was assessed and pronounced deceased by AMR which cancelled the helicopter. Engine 59 was “standing by” for the Coroner to arrive for extrication of the patient.

According to the BC report, the victim was a 12-year-old male (DOB 9-11-2001) and pronounced deceased at scene as a result of traumatic injuries.

When driving around schools, please use high caution. Lets prevent incidents like this from ever happening again.

This makes me so sad this morning too read this being that on that Friday 9-20-13 I just voiced my concern’s about people driving too fast on East 18th near Antioch High in the early A.m. hour’s, as well as the P.M. hours without no respect, or regard to it’s a school zone, Honestly after speaking too the security patrol, vice principal, going up the latter too even leaving a message for the school superintendent…With not much positive results, only being given excuse’s after excuse’s, everyone passing the buck, or problem over too someone else….finally I called the AUSD, reach a very helpful lady their who was helpful enough too listen too my concern’s, as well as share some of her same concern’s with me, She was helpful enough too even take the time too give me some referral’s of other’s that I need too address my concern’s with about the Serious Traffic Congestion Problems that takes place each, every morning, afternoon between Sycamore Dr, all the way threw too East 18th near Antioch High, G.st over ramp, As well as my concern’s of even staff their at AHS, other school staff who enter, exit the school area’s as well with no regard’s, or respect that their on a school campus, sad thing is a lot of these rushy, rude people got job’s and are working threw the AUSD…..This is beyond sad ….Well Know some parent
s child has been hit, killed, Just maybe know some of these highly paid people will take the time too listen too a parent with concern’s such as myself, as well as higher more traffic patrol such as a traffic police officer doing these above hour’s so no other parent losses their child this way!, I’m sending my heart felt prayer’s too this child, their family, friends, classmates……………… A concern parent of Antioch Ca.

Sad to hear this and I feel terrible for all involved. That is a very dangerous road and I hope this accident prompts changes in drivers habits throughout the country.

I believe you should remove the BC report info. It’s a bit much to say the child was dragged and hope you consider being more sensitive to those involved with this tragedy. I heard7th graders are in the gym with grief counselors and are being told they can go home if they wish.

Prayers to the Byron and Discovery Bay Community today. Please remember the folks at AMR and ECCFPD as they had to get the boy out from under the vehicle.

As a fellow east county rider, my heart goes out to the family of this child. While I spend hours suffering on relentless, windswept climbs nothing compares to the pain this family has to endure. I hope that some day all schools will have dedicated bike paths so kids on bikes can avoid cars.

This is so sad, prayers to the family and the driver who has to live with this image.

Señor Pew Pew Sep 23, 2013 - 1:52 pm

Poor kid, I cannot imagine what his family is going through. Along with the driver this has been a tragic day.
That stretch of road has been a race track for years, unfortunately it always takes something like this for them to “fix” it.

Tim Sep 23, 2013 - 3:11 pm

Senior Pew Pew,

Really? I did not read anything in the post that this unfortunate accident was speed related.

Are you just making things up to appear relevant?

Marie Wirth Sep 23, 2013 - 3:06 pm

My heart aches for the grieving family but oh my gosh, the poor driver. I am sure she is devastated and my heart goes out to her as well. What a tragedy.

#icanhelp you were not there you should not judge.

Emily Sep 23, 2013 - 6:14 pm

Enoonmai- It could have simply been that she was looking to her left to get on the road and assumed the child would be going in the gate to her right.

You have no idea what was going on so don’t be someone that makes assumptions.

Your words are insensitive and really just ignorant. A child died as a result of a bad choice that she made. She has children that attended school with that child, she made a deadly mistake today that she will have to live with the rest of her life. There will probably be other consequences too. But the worst part is that a family lost their sweet boy today. We should be focusing on sending our support to everyone who is hurting in the worst way right now.

MostlyNuts Sep 23, 2013 - 10:46 pm

Please refrain from passing judgment without knowing the situation. It is a dangerous corner and no safe way for any child to access the school not in a car or bus. The driver was traveling slow, and we cannot say she was doing anything other than the right thing. Sometimes you can do everything in your power to be as safe as the circumstances allow and still have an accident. Come drive the school and see for yourself.
Forgive…forgive…

ECVsBrother Sep 23, 2013 - 6:53 pm

This is the worst thing that can happen to a parent. Very sad. The woman who hit the child will also suffer for years to come. Very tragic.

Janine Newman Sep 23, 2013 - 7:15 pm

This is not the first time this has happened at this school roadway. My children went to this school in early 2000’s. We fought for a signal light but were shot down by the county. This driver was traveling 10mph when this incident happened according to the other news reports. This is just a severe tragic accident and I hope this will finally open the counties eyes to the necessity of a traffic light that has been needed here for years. Prayers to both families this is a horrible tragic accident and such a loss of a young child.

Tim Sep 23, 2013 - 9:43 pm

Janine,

Traffic signals are usually at intersections-not at driveways. In either case I’m not sure it would have made a difference. The entrance has already been relocated from J4 to Byer Rd. Traffic engineers factor in many things, not just emotional reactions. Apparently a traffic signal is not warranted. Driver awareness is. IMHO, East county already has too many traffic signals. Please refresh my memory, what other fatality has happened at this school roadway?

The reality is it was an accident and there are two grieving families. That’s the issue.
