CA Most Stressful Cities, Antioch Ranked 6th

by ECT

credit donkey

According to the website CreditDonkey, a recent survey ranked Antioch as the 6th most stressful California city to live in.

To find the most stressful cities in California, they first calculated the odds of being a victim of violent crime based on crime statistics from the FBI. They included the odds of being a victim, commute time, average hours worked per week, percentage of divorces and percentage of income spent on housing.

The rankings are as follows:

10. Los Angeles
9. Carlsbad
8. Vallejo
7. Richmond
6. Antioch
5. Palmdale
4. Victorville
3. Inglewood
2. Oceanside
1. Lancaster

Here is what they said about Antioch:

#6 Antioch

  • Odds of being a victim of violent crime: 1 in 98 inhabitants
  • Commute time: 38.8 minutes
  • Average hours worked per week: 36.8
  • Percentage of divorcees: 7.8% of males, 10.6% of females
  • Percentage of income spent on housing: 30.7%

Antioch is a small town northeast of San Francisco. As a commuter town to the greater San Francisco Bay Area, it goes without saying that the average daily commute is bound to be long. Antioch also came in a close second to the most dangerous city on our list, as the odds of being a victim of a violent crime are 1 in 98 inhabitants. While real estate is cheaper in Antioch than the rest of the Bay Area, residents still spend 30.7% of their income on rent.

Well Mr. Mayor, what do you have to say about this?

Terry Jul 16, 2014 - 9:38 am

Jim,

I like where your head is at. But lets not put this on the Mayor. I do want him to discuss crime for once, I am curious where Tony Tiscareno and Monica Wilson stand? We also have candidates now. They need to talk to. If crime is not anyone’s number 1 issue, they do not get my vote.

I think it’s time for a change. A change in direction with more police officers, so if my home alarm goes off again it doesn’t take APD 2.5 hours to show up. If the mayor and other city leadership team doesn’t address the increasing crime issue, I’m sure those in power will have a very short term in office at the next election.

No one talks about the real issue. It’s the fact that Antioch continues to build houses.

Think about this, Why would you continue to build MORE homes when the police and other services are stretched to the limit right now.

Yet, they continued to build as there were foreclosed homes on every block. Who will eventually buy these homes? Investors? low income? If you are ranked number 6 on the most stressful places to live because of crime why would you build more housing to attract that target audience?

Who makes $$$ front this? Builders? investors? City? Yet there is always “no money”.

Someones making money, don’t worry : )

To solve problems, you need to start at what caused the problem.

Gee, when did problems escalate and get out of control again? You can track it directly to the uncontrolled growth in Antioch yet the city continues to build.

That folks, is the real outrage….

You are right Annette but the homes we see being built now and in recent years were approved more than 4 or 5 councils ago. That is YEARS ago. I do have a problem with some of the building THIS council has approved out by the bypass and Laurel Road and around Canada Valley Road west. There are others but the exact areas escape me. This council has decreased any funding we should get from fees to encourage development.
Really dumb. We need to catch up before we do one more thing.

Darlene Jul 16, 2014 - 10:57 am

Antioch can’t seem to catch a break.

J.Masters Jul 16, 2014 - 2:31 pm

Antioch is catching a break, I bet it’s much worse than what people think. We’re only hearing of some of the problems that actually make the news. The truth might come out eventually.

just wondering Jul 16, 2014 - 12:32 pm

ABAG says if communities like Antioch fail to build low income homes according to their recommended guidelines, then no more future funding….. with applicable penalties…. How can we effectively manage our local community with outside pressures pushing us for more growth? Maybe our council can issue a growth moratorium backed by the courts… but those same courts are releasing low level criminals to make room in surrounding prisons…. and many of the released have gravitated here … and few continue to violate terms of their probation…. it is a personal decision, and not all concerned can do this, but just leave the area since law abiding Antioch citizens are no longer represented … just leave…

you are right growth needs to stop ,and while there are development agreements the City has approved you could slow the development down by reducing inspectors. I also think you begin to hold apartment owners responsible for renting to criminals. Let them pay for Police services. I support the proposed fee assessment for rental owners (I am one) but unlike the apartment owners who are complaining they should be paying a yearly fee of $1200 which is a lot more than the proposal. And all that money should be directed forwards Police services for rental units.

Annette Logan Jul 17, 2014 - 7:28 am

Absolutely cliff,

Go try to build something in Marin County to see how they “slow it down”,

Then compare property prices.

Antioch city leaders are either ignorant or playing their constituents for fools like Bell CA.

Though I am for it, the rental tax, at that rate, is a ruse. That money is just a band aid that will get absorbed in the general fund

Because:
A) It is not enough to really hurt the investors, They will pass it on to the renters. if you increase it more they couldn’t pass it on and the city leaders very well know this.

B) They will continue to build and cater to the same old clientele while the builders / investors AND City leaders who get elected by these same special interests profit. (look at the contributions to the current and past mayors and supervisors)

The argument that the special tax will hurt property values is a joke, in fact the rentals are what is hurting property values.

As far as ABAG goes, I think one could consider any housing in Antioch “low income” compared to the rest of the Bay Area, NO need to build MORE as every home just about qualifies!!

This folks is how you will START to reduce (or at least keep it at current levels )crime instead of increasing it…

BS on stress. Other factors maybe but the only thing that causes me stress is the negativity from citizens and lack of willingness to get in there and help. Don’t wait to be asked there is plenty to do to help out. Help your neighbor clean up his yard. Sweep the sidewalk and kill the weeds Look around you for God’s sake! Pick up a park. Trash dumped on some lot? Go pick it up!

Government Slave Jul 16, 2014 - 3:47 pm

Nothing causes me more stress than our blood sucking government.

Reginald Jamal Brown Jul 16, 2014 - 4:49 pm

LMAO… you gotta be able to laugh when things are this ridiculous for Antioch.

But don’t worry folks, our competent and prestigious mayor said, “Things are getting better”

Chuck Jul 16, 2014 - 5:56 pm

GS, there is one thing. Blood sucking freeloaders and thieves. Oh, I mean two.

The school board mayor and council members Mary Roach caused this problem 20 years ago. Let’s fill the schools with Richmond and Oakland kids since the school board was insolvent Clair smith ring a bell Jim Davis her best friend? Then the investors turned the beautiful homes into section 8’s and ruined Antioch! Everyone fled to Brentwood. The schools stunk, the council and school board have always been corrupt. Don’t believe them vote their asses out! Pray for Christians to stand up and run know the general plan and the brown act and civil law. Go to your meetings and fight! Everyone wants to complain who is tough enough to change it through Christ Jesus? Hmmm life is not easy. I told you so on TV over and over now you know. 4 members remember illiterate Mary called me a liar every meeting. Payton, Roacha, Davis, Claire Smith, Liz Rimbault, Joel Keller, Don Frietas, and all their cronies did this and then demonized folks who told the truth. So you get what you vote for! So glad to be in the south, guns, church, flags, low regulations, and freedom!

Julio Jul 17, 2014 - 6:17 am

Frankly Angel, we are glad you are gone also. You were no angel. We definitely do not need another awful school board member on the city council. They have all been bad except for Gary Agopian.

Where did Antioch go wrong??????? Jul 17, 2014 - 8:29 pm

Please no more comments Angel. Your council began the three ring circus and it has not let up. Next thing you know, ralph and norma hernandez will fire up on this site.

Sheri Jul 17, 2014 - 8:33 pm

Please come to the next city council meeting on Tuesday the 22nd. Help us fight for our city. The council members need to hear how the citizens feel and what we want.

Reginald Jamal Brown Jul 17, 2014 - 11:03 pm

I think it’s time for a recall action. They have been hearing what the citizens feel and want for year! Yet they never listen or take any action for the law abiding citizens.

Grandma Martins Jul 18, 2014 - 9:28 am

Thank you for giving us the section 8 from east Oakland and Richmond! I was born and raised here. I am moving to Georgia! Can not wait to get out of here! Voted 2xs to pay for new police officers to protect us from the prisoners moving to their moms new homes in Antioch when they get out of jail! None have been added yet! Can not arrest the bad because it is profiling! I have neighbors that have their garbage piled up on my fence for 2 years now. There is a law that you have to have garbage pick up! I turned it in and nothing happens! Mayor, you should have these fine people living next to you, and have the police do nothing! One of these fine citizens threaten my life and tried to hit me I front of my small Grandchildren, the police said that there was nothing they could do about it! What are the police and laws for? Those on parol!
