Brentwood School District Receives Additional Claims

The Brentwood Union School District received an additional 15 claims, by students and parents, alleging physical or emotional abuse by special education teacher Dina Holder. These claims will be reviewed by the Districts legal counsel, by administrators of the joint powers authority that provides liability coverage to the District.

In January, the Districts JPA reached a settlement with 17 plaintiffs, which included students and parents, alleging abuse by Ms. Holder. These plaintiffs received $8 million in compensation and legal fees and agreed to dismiss their lawsuit. Holder pleaded no contest misdemeanor child endangerment in 2011. She is no longer an employee of the District.

The most recent claims are filed by parents of other children who were in Ms. Holder’s classes or interacted with her. These parents allege that they only recently became aware that injuries or other changes in their children that may have been caused by Ms. Holder.

We will rely on the advice of our own attorneys and on the JPA administrators in determining how to respond to these claims. All claims against the District follow and established process of review and response.

Our district continues to ensure that students are educated in a safe environment. Every employee in the District has received additional training on the responsibilities of being a mandated reporter, and the District is working in partnership with the Child Abuse Council to provide ongoing additional training. There is a clear plan in place in the District to ensure that every employee is training on a regular basis with the most up-to-date information.

Our current staff continues to work tremendously hard to meet the needs of all of our students. While it is essential that we carefully review and defend any cases brought against the District, our focus will remaining on the 8,600 students that deserve our absolute best.

No, shame on those parents for using their children to get money. Dina has already payed the price of a 5 second mistake with a child, who by the way returned to school the following day as if nothing happened. All other reports of Dina in the paper were ALLEGATIONS. What really happened is a lawyer got a hold of the situation and the media has blown it out of proportion. Now they’re rounding up parents from previous years to see if they would like to make some money. The Brentwood School District handled it poorly, and the media made Dina look like an “animal” when in fact she was and is a kind, nurturing teacher of 20+ years, a loving mother of two wonderful adult children, a friend to many (we still love her and support her) and a loving, caring, colleague (where were you when your colleague needed you?) Shame on you again, parents! I know the truth! I just wish eveyone else would see what’s going on here! Finally, it is never OK to harm a child, and Dina has payed the price. BACK OFF HER!
