Brentwood Police Officer Honored with Lifesaving Award

by ECT

During Tuesday’s Brentwood City Council Meeting, Officer Ed Loss was honored with a life saving award involving a 53-year-old man.

Brentwood Mayor Bob Taylor presented both a ribbon and a certificate of recognition.

“This community cannot survive without our public safety,” said Mayor Bob Taylor. “I want you to know this council supports all our public safety officers. My gosh, nerves of steel.”

Officer Loss thanked everyone for the support saying how the City provided the training and the AED that allowed them to do their job.

“The last agency I worked out, we didn’t have AED’s so this would not have even been possible. It’s nice to know we have the training and the resources to help the community when needed,” explained Loss.

LIFESAVING AWARD – OFFICER ED LOSS

On November 29, 2015 at ten minutes to ten in the morning, Officer Ed Loss responded to a call involving a 53 year old male subject who was not breathing and was turning blue. Officer Loss responded code-3 and arrived at the location within four minutes. All of our patrol cars are equipped with AED’s, and Officer Loss subsequently entered the residence with his and was directed upstairs by family members to the subject who was on the floor unconscious.

Officer Loss did not detect a pulse or breathing, and immediately utilized the AED to deliver a shock. After doing so, he and an 18-year old family member administered CPR to the subject, who regained a pulse and started breathing on his own prior to the arrival of medical personnel.

Once paramedics took over, Officer Loss further assisted by removing clothing, organizing rescue equipment, and relaying pertinent and critical facts about the patient that he had previously obtained from family members while in the midst of bringing the patient back to life. This demonstrated Officer Loss’ ability to both obtain and retain vital information during a stressful situation.

The patient was ultimately transported to the hospital, conscious and alert. Medical personnel were very complimentary of Officer Loss and reported that he was responsible for saving the subjects life. Officer Loss demonstrated maturity and calm professionalism in a time-sensitive and stressful situation. He handled the most critical part of this incident as a solo first responder, and utilized his valuable department-issued equipment and the medical training he has received as a Brentwood Police Officer in his successful efforts to save the life of one of our citizens. This gentleman is currently alive and well living in our City, and is scheduled to return to work in two weeks.

The Chief is honored to present Officer Ed Loss with the Brentwood Police Department Lifesaving Award ribbon, which he is authorized to wear as part of his class A uniform.
