Brentwood: New Website Asks Where is Our Library?

by ECT

Brentwood, CA – A new property is being developed in the Internet real estate world, the website www.whereisourlibrary.com. The website’s landing page calls itself “A Grass Roots Movement” while featuring an artistic photograph of grassy, golden hills and oak trees just south of Brentwood.

“Residents of Brentwood, California, are beginning to wonder, where is our library?” the website asks, as it goes on to describe the lack of funding or planning for the replacement of the town’s library, demolished in 2009.

The website is not the responsibility of the Brentwood Library Foundation, the Friends of the Brentwood Library, the City, or any other known organization. Rather, the website lists mysterious “The Organizers” on the Contact page. A quick check of the Whois directory, which normally lists ownership of all internet sites, shows that ownership of the website is masked by one of the many services that provide anonymity to website owners. It shows only that the registration expires on June 4, 2016.

The website’s Main Menu offers visitors the ability to “Get a Free Bumper Sticker,” “Sign Our Petition,” “Get Info” and view “Things You Can Do” and a “Links” page.

“I think it’s wonderful,” said Bryan Scott, an activist on the Brentwood Library cause. “There has been spontaneous resident activity on this issue before, and I suspect this is yet another indication of the community’s support for the new library.”

Scott is a resident of Brentwood, a member of the Contra Costa County Library Commission and Vice President of the Brentwood Library Foundation.

The website’s landing page clearly states, presumably to the Brentwood City Council, “We Want to Know.”

Internet users can also sign the website’s petition, participate in a poll, and get a free bumper sticker at www.whereisourlibrary.com. For now the website’s ownership remains a mystery. However, email messages to the email address [email protected] do get answered, presumably by one of “The Organizers.”
