Brentwood: Illegal Fireworks Likely Cause in Large Vegetation Fire, Business Damaged

At 10:07 pm Saturday, East Contra Costa Fire Protection District firefighters responded to a report of a vegetation fire on Hanson Lane in Brentwood.

ECCFPD Brentwood Fire IMG_5013Upon arrival, Engine 93 located a fire in the creek area of Marsh Creek between Hanson Lane and Elkins Way. While units were responding, the fire jumped the creek and into the yard of Town & Country Roofing which set off a large exterior fire.

Inside the yard was roofing materials, vehicles, tractors, propane, and other miscellaneous items.

Brentwood Police immediately shut down Elkins Way to allow fire crews to work and began clearing the trail.

ECCFPD Brentwood Fire IMG_5043During the time Engine 93 was on scene, Engine 52 was checking into a fire on Poppy Drive while Engine 94 was on Mariner Road also checking on a fire.

Mutual aid was requested for both Contra Costa County Fire, CALFIRE and Alameda County Fire along with Tracy Fire who were unable to respond.

ECCFPD Brentwood Fire IMG_5017Within an hour, firefighters were able to control the fire and contain it to the yard. Meanwhile, CALFIRE firefighters worked the Marsh Creek Trail putting out hot spots and fire which was about a mile long.

As of 6:00 am, Engine 52 and Engine 94 were still on scene watching hot spots and made a request for heavy equipment to help with mop up efforts. They were expected to remain on scene for several more hours.

According to the District, they believe the fire was started from fireworks.

While all ECCFPD units were on scene of this fire, here is a look at what occurred in the District.

  • 11:03 pm: Report of a vegetation fire in the 2200 block of Discovery Bay. The Fire Chief was dispatched with an engine out of San Ramon and Livermore. Unable to locate.
  • 11:18 pm: Report of a residential structure fire in 1400 block Ashwood Drive. A fire engine from Bay Point, Concord and Livermore all responded. The response time as 15-minutes+.
  • 3:22 am: Outside fire SR 4 & Marsh Creek. Crews were on scene for 19-minutes.
  • 5:06 am: Residential structure fire in the 500 block of Mandevilla Dr in Brentwood. Turned out to be arson after multiple porta potties were set on fire.
  • 6:15 am: Traffic collision at Griffith Lane and Balfour in Brentwood.
