Brentwood: Heritage High School Sophomore to be Charged in “Shooter” Hoax

The Brentwood Police Department are investigating a hoax that quickly spread at Heritage High School Friday and may land a sophomore student in trouble with the law.

According to Brentwood Police Sgt. Walter O’Grodnick, a 15-year-old sophomore student was trying to play a prank on someone through text messages and it spread. Once the school found out about the text messages, they contacted police who responded.

Police quickly discovered the identity of the teen and further investigated and said charges will be filed and the student will likely face discipline from the school in the form of a suspension.

“We are looking to file a misdemeanor of the education code which is punishable by possible juvenile hall or a fine and this appears not to be a felony,” said O’Grodnick.

Police are still investigation and additional details may be released Friday afternoon.

Heritage High School quickly responded to parents by alerting them of the incident and assuring them no student was in danger.

Dear Parents/Guardians:

We recently became aware of a rumor regarding a threat of school shooting today. We notified the Brentwood Police Department per protocol as we investigated the matter. I want to inform you that we know the source of the rumor and it is a hoax. Our student and staff are safe on campus.

I wish to use this opportunity to express my appreciation to our staff and officers of the Brentwood Police Department for their prompt and thorough response to issues regarding the safety of our school.
