Brentwood: Garbage Can Fire Damages Two Homes Monday Morning

by ECT

At 7:04 am Monday, East Contra Costa Fire Protection District firefighters were dispatched to a report of a structure fire in the City of Brentwood in the 2700 block of Emory Oak Ct.

It was during this time, all units were dispatched 10-minutes earlier to a 1-acre vegetation fire along Vasco Road near the county line—with East Contra Costa Fire Units being sent to Vasco, Contra Costa County Fire units were then dispatched. With Contra Costa Fire battling a church fire in Antioch, the closest units were from Pittsburg and Central County.

At that point, Engine 52 and Engine 53 were redirected to the structure fire

According to Battalion Chief Ross Macumber, Engine 52 arrived on scene and made immediate fire attack on a fence fire between two homes. One house sustained significant exterior damage while the interior had minor smoke damage. The second residence had minor cosmetic damage to the exterior.

Macumber said the point of origin on the fire was a garbage can on the side of the home—it was not suspicious.

Macumber stated this was a close call.

“It could have been a lot worse. They made it there in the nick of time,” said Macumber.  “If Engine 52 and Engine 53 didn’t redirect it would have been myself and a ConFire unit there first on scene waiting for additional resources.  We would have been trapped waiting for resources coming from a long distance away because all local resources were committed elsewhere.”

The vegetation fire on Vasco Road was handled by 59 with CalFire and East Bay Regional Parks and was limited to 1 acre on the side of the road. Alameda County also sent a response to the Vasco Fire

Lots of fires lately. Sounds like either arson or new tax. Anyway it’s kudos for our firefighters. Good job.

Don’t get the new tax comment but I’ll second the kudos to the firefighters, these guys in Brentwood are running all day long. I live near Balfour and that engine is running back and forth along Balfour all day, from one call to the next. We are definitely get short-changed when it comes to fire protection and emergency medical services.
