At 2:01 pm Sunday, emergency crews responded to the intersection of Balfour Road and Walnut Blvd in Brentwood for a four-car vehicle accident with five total patients, two who were critically injured.

Upon arriving on scene, Battalion 5 observed seeing multiple people laying on the side of the road, however, all parties were out of the vehicles and no extrication was needed. A vehicle was also smoking at the time of arrival of emergency crews.

Battalion 5 immediately requested two medical helicopters for the critically injured patients while two patients with minor injuries were transported by AMR to Walnut Creek. Four other patients refused medical treatment.

The incident required Engines 52 and 54 to work the accident location with Engine 59 out of Discovery Bay to help land the medical helicopters and a nearby location.

The incident is currently under investigation by Brentwood Police; however, there was a large skid mark in the eastbound direction of Balfour Road where a green jeep had locked up its beaks before rear-ending at least into two other vehicles which that impact then caused damage to a fourth vehilce.  It is unknown if alcohol or drugs were related to the crash but speed does appear to be a factor.

Fire crews were on scene for just over an hour. The accident closed the eastbound direction of Balfour Road at Walnut as emergency crews worked the incident and police investigated the crash.

No information has been provided on the condition of the critically injured patients.
