Brentwood: Committee Recommends Mayor Continue to Receive Added Compensation

by ECT

On Tuesday, the Brentwood City Council will look to approve a recommendation to continue paying Brentwood Mayor Bob Taylor an additional $500 per month through the completion of his term in 2020.

The item, which is on the Consent Calendar, would continue an ordinance for the pay increase set forth in October of 2014.

Currently, the salary of the Mayor and all City Council Members was adjusted to $939.26 per month with the Mayor receiving an additional $500 each month. Through the ordinance, Taylor makes $1,439.26 each month.

In September, a Mayor’s Compensation and Benefits Ad Hoc Committee comprised of Vice Mayor Bryant and Council Member Stonebarger was created. The Ad Hoc Committee was tasked with reviewing the Mayor’s compensation and benefits and returning to the full Council with recommendations regarding any revisions.

On October 18, 2016, the Mayor’s Compensation and Benefits Ad Hoc Committee met and reviewed the Mayor’s duties. In recognition of the additional duties which continue to be performed by the Mayor, the committee recommended a continuation of the $500 per month of additional compensation.

The additional duties performed by the Mayor include the following:

  • Participating in multiple County, regional and state-wide organizations on behalf of the City, including but not limited to Mayors Conference, ABAG, California Association of Councils of Government, Contra Costa County Transportation Authority, Contra Costa County Airport Land Use Commission, Contra Costa County Elections Advisory Panel, East Contra Costa Water Manager Association, East Bay Economic Development Alliance and League of California Cities.

The committee also recommended that the additional compensation provided expire at  the conclusion of the Mayor’s 2016-2020 term. Upon election of any future Mayor, the City Council can then make an individualized evaluation as to whether additional compensation for the Mayor is warranted.

If approved, the mayors increased salary would come from the General Fund and would be an annual cost increase of approximately $6,000.
