Tomorrow night’s Brentwood City Council meeting appears to be Consent Calendar heavy which should equate to a quicker than usual meeting. I did manage to find three agenda items within consent that I thought were interesting which includes a traffic study, a grant acceptance for the Every 15 Minutes program, and the cancellation of future council meetings.

Here are three items below.

Item C3

Adopt a Resolution approving the speed limits for Brentwood Boulevard with in the City of  Brentwood. The Traffic Engineer has determined the recommended miles per hour (“mph”) speed limits for the following sections of roadway to be:

  • Brentwood Boulevard from Delta to Nancy Street – 40 MPH
  • Brentwood Boulevard from Nancy Street to Central Boulevard – 35 MPH
  • Brentwood Boulevard from Central Boulevard to Chestnut Street – 25 MPH
  • Brentwood Boulevard from Chestnut Street to Fir Street – 35 MPH
  • Brentwood Boulevard from Fir Street to Valdry Court – 40 MPH
  • Brentwood Boulevard from Valdry Court to southerly city limit – 55 MPH

It should be noted, the new proposed speed limits are the same as currently posted along Brentwood Boulevard. If you read the staff report, this item includes the study which also shows an increase of accidents for most of these roads.

Brentwood Boulevard from Delta Road to Nancy Street had 14 accidents in 2011 while in 2012 it had 23.  Meanwhile, Nancy Street to Central Boulevard had just 5 accidents in 2011, while in 2012 it jumped to 11. The study is a worthy read.

Item C5:
Adopt a Resolution: (1) authorizing the acceptance of monies from the California Highway  Patrol/Office of Traffic Safety and the acceptance of donations in the form of monies, goods,  and services for the Every 15 Minutes program; and (2) authorizing the expenditure of the funds  for the Every 15 Minutes program.

This event is to take place April 4-5, 2013 and includes the participation of the Brentwood Police

Department, California Highway Patrol, East Contra Costa Fire Protection District, American  Medical Response (AMR), Heritage High School Staff, John Muir Medical Center, Cal Star  Community Officials, Brentwood Funeral Home, Arrowhead Tow and a wide cross-section of the  community at-large.

The California Highway Patrol grant is in the amount of $9,999.99 and is a budgeted  expenditure for the successful presentation of the Every 15 Minutes program. In addition to the  monies provided by the California Highway Patrol grant, $1,000.00 is budgeted in the Every 15  Minutes portion of the Police Department’s approved 2012/13 Operating Budget.

Item C6
Adopt a Resolution authorizing the cancellation of the July 9, 2013, City Council meeting to  accommodate summer vacation schedules and the cancellation of the November 26, and December 24, 2013, meetings due to holidays.

The council better ask why there is an increase of accidents and what has changed such as lack of enforcement.

Thank you for pointing out the traffic study that would have otherwise gone unnoticed. The increase in accidents should be given more consideration by the council. I am alarmed they have increased that much and safety should be a top concern.

I think the study is timely and opens the eyes up of many decision makers. I trust this council will do the right thing. It’s a good group up there.
