With a total of 9-people shot in Antioch in the last seven days, unofficially, violent crime appears to be increasing in East County. In fact, due to shootings in the last several months, more never before gun owners or people on the fence about owning a gun have been coming into the store seeking protection.

“A lot of people want to stand their ground and do not want to move. They want to protect their family and belongings and are seeking solutions to feel safer. With crime on the rise, people who never have thought about owning a gun have come in because they see the crime and maybe it’s their neighbor who was broken into which really hits home so they want to feel protected,” explained Casha.

From a home protection standpoint, Casha recommends that for the person who may have never fired a gun or owned a gun to start off with a shotgun. He cautioned that sometimes people do not feel comfortable with a shotgun at first so they go with a smaller caliber pistol.

“The universal sound of get out of my house is a racking of a shotgun,” said Casha. “I recommend that everyone get familiar with their firearms that they plan on deploying. If you don’t have the training to use the firearm, when the time comes to actually use the firearm and are not familiar with it, it’s not going to be used effectively so the prevention of that is knowing that you have that tool to protect your family and home. You have to be good at using that tool hoping you never have to use it.”

Casha is well aware of the psychology of owning a firearm scares some people, but to help people overcome that fear he has partnered with Delta Tactical Training Group, a local veteran owned company out of Antioch.

Delta Tactical Training offers beginning handgun safety and training classes. With the partnership, the Brentwood Armory offers a special program where their customers can get a discounted rate to safety courses as well as packages.

He explained it’s great for them to be able to send business to a local company versus sending their customers 30-40 miles away to get proper gun training. He considers the training a service to the community.

“We have people who come in and want to buy a gun, but they do not feel comfortable. Now we can recommend a training to help get them comfortable around firearms. It’s a full package from purchasing a firearm, offering training, and special packages with equipment,” explained Casha. “With a potential first time gun buyer, we tend to take our time with them and mold them from a small hand gun and help them find training with a company like Delta Tactical.”

The goal of the Brentwood Armory since Day 1 is to help customers feel comfortable around firearms and feeling empowered to protection themselves.

Casha admitted that the Armory has been getting a lot of females coming in recently who have been a victim of a crime or near victim of a crime and they want to feel more protected. In some case, they have nobody in their life to protect them so that responsibility falls on them.

“We offer female customer’s 1-hour before open and 1-hour after close so they will not feel intimidated during a purchase with others around. Outside of that, no matter who is asking the question, there is never any stupid question. We come from the perspective you do not know anything about firearms to maybe you are super advanced. We will gauge,” said Casha.

Besides firearms, the Brentwood Armory offers non-lethal solutions for protection such as lipstick pepper spray to Tasers which some people did not know were available at the store.

“It feels really good to us that we provide a service to people that might not know it existed or it’s hard to obtain. Being a local gun store in a community like Brentwood and being here for two and a half years people would have to go outside of Brentwood to get resources they need to provide that protection for their house. Being local now, people know we are their go to firearm store,” said Casha.

The Brentwood Armory has firearms for all levels of experience from home protection to a shooting enthusiast.

“We offer beginning, novice to advanced guns. We run the gamut,” says Casha. “We are a one stop shop to buy your shooting supplies. Also, potentially have training on the firearms you purchase. If you need training, we have you covered. If your novice, we have the program for you. If you are an expert, we have a program for you.”

Gun Safety

According to Casha, the golden rule is to always treat every firearm as if it’s loaded and to always have a safe reliable place to store your weapons.

When purchasing a firearm at the Brentwood Armory, before you cannot leave their store with the gun you have to have a California Department of Justice Approve lock at a minimum. Each person buying a firearm goes through a gun safety demonstration where the buyer then has to demonstrate a capability of handling the gun in a safe manner such as loading the gun, making it safe, storing it and locking it properly.

For storing the gun at home, especially with children, a lock box or gun vault should have some serious consideration.

“What is even more important is putting an extra layer of security at home if you have children and that can be done through gun vaults or safes,” says Casha. “A lot of times we encourage people to buy safes if they have children at home.”

With technology improving, in the wake of an emergency, they do make biometric gun safes for hand guns where you put your palm print down and it releases the gun in seconds.

Casha explains that they do make quick access hand gun safes for emergencies called biometric safes where you basically put your palm print down and it releases it—up to 15-people if needed. It releases the door in under a second. Costs can range up

“It’s always a good idea to have a good defense against the criminals. Where is your gun, trained on your gun, making sure your gun is functional, having the right ammunition and making sure you can get to your firearm in a safe manner against the criminals?”
