On Saturday, April 2, 2016 at around 2 p.m., Brentwood officers responded to the Word of Life Christian Fellowship Church located at 4501 O’Hara Ave., Suite-A to investigate a sexual assault of a male child under the age of 10.
Investigation revealed Ladell Smith, 19 of Oakley sexually assaulted the known victim within a restroom inside the church during non-service hours. Smith immediately fled the scene on foot following the assault, but was apprehended a short distance from the church, and taken into custody without incident. The victim was located at the scene physically unharmed and reunited with his parent. Both victim and Smith were members of the church.
Smith was booked into the Martinez Detention Facility on multiple felony counts of sexual assault and child molestation. On April 6, 2016 the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office officially charged SMITH with four felony counts of sexual assault of a child under the age of 10. His charges include two counts of oral copulation or sexual penetration and two counts of forcible lewd act upon a child. His bail has been set at $2.2 million.
Smith’s photo is being withheld to avoid compromising ongoing investigative efforts.
Smith has ties to Richmond, San Francisco and Oakley, and it is believed based on this investigation other victims may have been exposed to Smith’s sexual misconduct.

Please pray for healing for the child, family and church. This is awful. A church is supposed to be a place of peace and comfort and joy. My heart breaks thinking of the little one who had his innocence and childhood robbed from him.

Churches and moral corruption have gone hand-in-hand for many centuries now. The orthodox doctrines of abstinence/purity have no doubt created a multitude of repressed sexual predators and their child prey. If our society can’t even muster up the strength to jail religious leaders for these types of crimes, what hope is there eradicating the average 19 year old pedophile?
