BrentCourt Dental Group Provides Heritage High Football With Athletic Mouth Guards

by ECT

The Heritage High School football team is one step closer to being ready for tonight’s game against Liberty High School thanks to BrentCourt Dental Group who provided special athletic mouth guards to the team.

Dr. Craig Chlebicki and Dr. Christopher Charles visited the team this week to talk about the pros and cons about wearing athletic guards while educating the team on their benefits. Each player received an athletic mouth guard that matches the color of the team’s uniform.

“Everyone wants a great smile, so why not protect it?” said Chlebicki.

According to Chlebicki, one of the main reason to wear a mouth guard is because 50% of kids playing football will have a traumatic tooth accident and that 5-million teeth per year will be knocked out by accident. By wearing athletic mouth guards, it will help prevent tooth damage and help minimize the likelihood of a concussion.

Chlebicki says they met with the team because one of their staff members husband is an assistant coach with the team and wanted them to discuss how wearing athletic guards for contact sports was beneficial in helping prevent dramatic injuries and concussions.

Although it is required by the State to wear mouth guards for contact sports, some athletes do not want to wear it.

“We discussed the benefits of why they needed to wear one in case they are fighting wearing it on the field. We also discussed how to clean it and care for it properly,” explained Chlebicki. “We wanted to bring the team together since everyone had different color mouth guards; we found a color that will match their uniform and now they have uniformed mouths for the big game.”

Dr. Christopher Charles was a walk-on quarterback at Michigan State and provided real life scenarios on the importance of mouth care while highlighting how special hometown rivalry games are which they will never forget.

According to BrentCourt Dental, there are three types of athletic guards:

  1. Ready Fit
  2. Mouth-formed (by boiling in hot water)
  3. Custom Fit

For athletes, the proper guard is one that is worn on the upper teeth and should be resilient, tear-resistant and comfortable. Proper care for the mouth guard is to clean with toothpaste and a tooth brush, avoid hot water/heat or else it will deform, bring it to your dentist to have cleaned during your regular check-ups
