Black Bear Diner: Buy a Dessert, $1 Donated to Make-A-Wish Foundation

by ECT

Black Bear Diner is giving East County residents a reason to order dessert this holiday season because for each dessert ordered, they will donate $1 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. In addition, they will also be hosting a raffle for homemade afgans of local sports teams where tickets can be purchased until the end of the month.

Stars can be purchased for $1 & $5. For every $5 Star you will receive eight raffle tickets with the drawing and celebration to be held on December 31. Brenda D’Amico came up with the idea for the afgan because she wanted to do something more than just donate from proceeds. The sports teams include the San Francisco Giants and 49ers along with the Oakland A’s and Raiders.

I was trying to think of something we could do to raise a little more money for Make-A-Wish. Since I make afghans all the time, I thought if I made our local sports teams, people may be tempted to donate a little more,” said D’Amico.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation has had an impact locally on the Jimmy and Brenda D’Amico as they consider Ally Jenkins a friend and she was a part of the program after receiving a wish.

“Our young friend, Ally Jenkins, who has dealt with two separate lung transplants wish in the past and has been a part of the program, receiving a wish, has expressed excitement in being a part of this campaign in some way….just haven’t thought what just yet,” explained D’Amico.

According to D’Amico,  all of the Black Bear Diners are in competition with one another to see who can raise the most money for the foundation. Personally, I think East County has the biggest heart of all so lets all pack in the diner for desert for the next few weeks to help them win the internal contest for bragging rights but also raise some money for a good cause.

For more on Ally Jenkins, the Brentwood Press did a story about her in 2009. In 2009, Black Bear Diner held a fundraiser where the community helped raise $12,000 to go toward Ally’s medical expenses.

I think this is wonderful. I have eaten there many times. Make-A-Wish Foundation is a great organization and really helps children in need.
