Discovery Bay Levee Fire

East Contra Costa Fire Protection units responded to a vegetation fire in Discovery Bay Thursday afternoon that burned one acre as crew’s battled heavy winds which turned something small into a potential hazard. Luckily, crews made it on scene quickly considering the remote location and prevented  a much larger burn.

The fire began at approximately 1:34 pm at the Levee at the Old River Bridge and State Route 4.  The fire began from a spark from a mower which forced crews to battle a slope and wind driven fire along the levee. The fire was contained to 1-acre.

Engine 59, 54, 94 and Water Tender 94 all responded along with Battalion Chief Brian Helmick.

I beleive that this was the first response from the reopened station 54.

Get this- . Due to the road repair, traffic was stopped in front of the house and I watched a driver throw a burning cigarette out his car window and onto E. Cypress Rd yesterday.

Isn’t there a lot of (flammable) peat land out there? I’m glad that the newly re-opened Brentwood station could respond. If their Byron and Disco Bay stations were also re-opened this could have been handled without putting the rest of the district at increased risk. Sooner or later the district is going to get burned.

Summer has come early this year. This could have been a mess.

No peat here just lots and lots of overgrown weeds and fuel for a nice grass fire.

Yes I think this is going to be a long hot summer. Things are way too dry already and today there is a heat advisory. Fires are going to be very scarey.
