Call the non-emergency number (listed on your police department’s official web page) and confirm that people at your door are actually officers before unlocking the door. The officers will radio in to dispatch, who will then tell you the officers’ names over the phone. We were actually in this exact situation a few days ago when detectives arrived looking for security footage. As in any security situation, don’t rely on any phone number given to you by the person(s) seeking access. You must obtain an official working phone number for yourself before confirming.
