Stockton, CA – As motorists prepare for their Labor Day holiday travel on Highway 12, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Stockton Area is gearing up to save lives. The CHP will focus its enforcement efforts on violations that cause the greatest risk to life and property.

During this enforcement effort, all available CHP officers will be on patrol to ensure everyone has a safe journey. Emphasis will be placed on removing impaired and reckless drivers from the roadway before they endanger their life or the lives of other motorists.

“The increased enforcement will provide the necessary patrols needed for this dangerous stretch of Highway 12,” said Assemblymember Jim Frazier whose district includes Highway 12. “I am thankful for the hard work of the CHP and I look forward to a continued partnership with them to keep our roads safe.”

“Through education and enforcement our officers are saving lives and reducing the risk of injury to those traveling on Highway 12,” said CHP Captain Rob Patrick, commander of the Stockton Area office.  “Remember to drive defensively, always wear your seat belt, and avoid distractions while you’re behind the wheel.”

So far in 2013 there have been 25 injury collisions, two of which resulted in a tragic loss of life on Highway 12 between the San Joaquin/Sacramento County line east to Lodi city limits.  The CHP, along with the motoring public’s help, is working diligently to prevent any further loss of life.

The enforcement effort will be conducted both in the air and on the ground. Officers will use patrol vehicles, motorcycles and fixed-wing aircraft to maximize enforcement and ensure safe travel.  Commercial officers will be conducting enforcement on commercial vehicle violations as well. The public is encouraged to be a part of this campaign by dialing 9-1-1 to report suspected drunk or reckless drivers.

The campaign, which coincides with the CHP’s statewide Maximum Enforcement Period, will begin on Friday August 30, 2013 and end at 11:59 p.m. Monday.  Media interested in covering the CHP’s enforcement efforts, should contact Stockton Area Public Information Officer James Smith, at (209) 943-8600, to schedule a ride a long or a fly along.

In addition to enforcement, he should be seeking funds to widen that section to allow for passing lanes at the very least. You take your life into your hands if you need to pass a clueless RV along that hiway!
