Asm Frazier Joins Select Committee Hearing to Investigate Governor Brown’s Newest Delta Tunnel Plan

by ECT

Sacramento, CA – On Tuesday, Assemblymember Jim Frazier (D Oakley) participated in a Senate informational hearing to examine the effectiveness of Governor Brown’s revised tunnel infrastructure plan, California Water Fix.

Jim Frazier“California Water Fix is Governor Brown’s third attempt to establish an unsustainable water conveyance plan for California,” said Assemblymember Frazier. “The Administration’s literal ‘tunnel vision’ has forced this proposal back to the drawing board several times, yet the glaring deficiencies in transparency, accountability, and public oversight still remain. The Assembly and Senate have conducted multiple hearings to ensure that the tough questions and onerous details of this plan do not go unchecked. If California is to consider the implementation of such a large-scale project, it is critical that the Legislature insert itself in this process by carefully tracking and reviewing the proposal from all angles.”

The hearing, entitled “Are The Tunnels Good For California?”, was held by the Senate Select Committee on Sacramento San Joaquin Delta, and addressed a broad range of issues, including:

  • An overview of California Water Fix and the role of the Legislature;
  • Overall fiscal responsibility and cost-effectiveness;
  • Effects of the drought on water delivery and revenues;
  • Economic and environmental impacts of tunnel construction in the Delta region;
  • Feasibility of meeting Co-Equal Goals;
  • Viable alternatives.

“Compromising the health of the Delta in the name of an ill-conceived infrastructure project is an absolute non-starter for me,” said Assemblymember Frazier. “What we need is a plan that invests in California’s success on a statewide level – not one that will singlehandedly destroy one of our most precious natural resources. It is imperative that we continue to examine thoughtful alternatives that will protect the Delta while simultaneously securing water reliability for our state as a whole.

The public review and comment period for the California Water Fix closes on Oct. 30. For more information on how to submit your comments or concerns, please click here.
